It draws air from out the sides of your machine. I just bought the coolermaster Cool Pad and I find that it works great. I can't provide you with any numbers but after using it for the past few hours I can say that the laptop is noticeably cooler.
I have the exact same laptop as Dave so I understand when he says the left side heats up. Now, however, it is only luke warm to the touch.
Not only does it perform well at cooling, but it also gives the laptop a much needed "lift" off the desk so that cables and optical drives are no longer in the way of your work space.
