I figure I should post a new topic; that the old one is getting pretty dusty.
This is a modified version of thecat2000's login screen which can be viewed here:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=112744Permissions are included in the ZIP file.
***Edit:
Important: For those of you NOT running a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, you must redownload this file to fix the white blotch problem. Both download sites have been updated.

Looks like the background image refuses to resize properly. This apparently happens when one uses 800x600 screen resolution also.
I have nearly no experience with login screens; I'm not sure what can be done about it short of doing a seperate login for each resolution.
If anyone else who has experience in making these things has a way to fix it, I'd be grateful to hear from you. But I'll look into possible solutions on my own also.
** Edit: Nevermind, scratch that about the resizing issue. I think I know what's causing it. If I'm right, expect a fix out in the next 30 minutes.

Ok, I think I've fixed the problem. Please, those of you experiencing the white patchiness, please redownload and tell me if the fix worked. Thank you.

*sigh* I guess the fix is a no-go...
Don't think I'll have this sorted out by tonight, but maybe someone can help me out on it? I think somehow, the login is set so that black becomes transparent in the background bitmap. Anyone know how I could possibly change this? Or maybe its not that at all, but any suggestions are welcome at this point.
hi , mate
you have the same gilitch that i had on this login : the password box isnt fully white...
and if you know how to had back : shuttind down windows, loging in etc.. text on the login please tell me, i dont know how

I'll see what I can come up with on that issue... Some people using higher resolutions are still experiencing the white patch problem, so I'll have to fix that first though.

1152x864 here, new version doesn't really do a fix either, just black weirdness instead of white (though of course, less noticable).
Thanks for trying.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary in that screenshot... Then again, I can't turn up the brightness and contrast on this LCD... Yeah, I know, damn crappy moniter but what can you expect from a laptop? Could you point out the trouble areas?
I'm gonna go see if I can get access to a different moniter.

Dec 23 2003, 06:45
Cranked up the brightness & contrast in photoshop here. Though on my monitor, even without cranking it up I can see it... so yeah, maybe it's just a bad image itself?
I could be wrong here but I think that's just the image not a resolution problem.

I'm trying to switch in a new background for the login... It may be a few hours before I have it... Sorry.

very nice..cept for the background. but still good work.
yeah, cool for the password box if you can manage to fix, btw, theres another one, that we managed to fix with cat on the old one :
pass your cursor slowly on the pic/usename you will see the shadow under the userpicture becoming plain purple...its a prob with png transparency:)
other than that, good work

You happen to remember how you fixed it?
I don't get this. Black, and all colors close to black get rendered as white when the resolution is not 1024x768! But your original login had a pure black background... How can that work? I haven't modified anything but the graphics.

You know, after playing with the xml myself when trying to edit some logons a few months ago, I can say that you are a brave soul for messing with it.

But we do appreciate all the work that's gone into this, very nice.

I also had the problems with the different blacks in the picture.. but it is very simple to solve....
Just open the .exe with reshack and save the bmp of the background to ur disk.. open it with ur favorite painting proggie and edit it the way u want..
Save it as bmp and then go back to reshack and replace the old one with ur edited.. save the hole thing and ur done..
if u r not able to edit the background urself use my version (also a lil bit smoother...)

Mind if I put that into my login and see if it fixes everything?
hmmm, i dont remember, i think we just modfied the png file... im gonne have a look when i get time and tell you

Ok, I've updated both sites yet again with DamuzZ's version of the background bitmap. It doesn't have the black/grey splotch problem, and it shouldn't have the white patch problem because there's no pure black on it. So...
Yay, the bugs have been squashed. I hope.
hey does this login have the welcome message for those who have computers to themselves with only 1 login?
Relativity_17
Dec 26 2003, 08:59
I'm not sure what you mean... This computer's always had more than one login, so I've never been able to see what the single user welcome looks like. Care to post a screenshot of it, and describe what you'd like it to look like/say?
Great update works very well. Thanks man!

Forgot to mention, new version works perfect. Fantastic man.
More of a general comment here but I can't see MS leaving this login screen as is. There needs to be the text telling the user that it's "saving personal settings... etc" because noobs will think it has froze. I bet they'll change it but for me it's fine without.

Very nice! I just switched to it.
Thats a 'replica' of the PDC build login screen? I've not seen it before. I dunno if any pointed out before... But it sure does resemble OS X - Panther's. Oh well!

Cool!

It's not a replica it's a conceptual design. It's close though. Check out thecats version it's pretty close to the actual version.

Read my first post all the way up there... I put a link to it.

No, its not meant to be a replica. I thought the original was a bit plain, so I switched some of the images to make it look smoother.
If anyone has more suggestions on what could be improved, speak up... New challenges are always nice.

When logging out? Hmm, I may be able to change it. Does it say the same thing on the default WinXP logout screen also? Its been so long, I've forgotten. Anyway, I'll be looking into other logins and how they work, so I should end up with a pretty good idea of how to do it, if its possible.

In the actual PDC version it doesn't have the text but it would be nice if you added it. Thx.

Evidence that I'm not a good coder. I've been trying for a few hours to enable the "Logging off...", etc part of the login screen. My efforts culminated in getting a black screen and a frozen computer every time the login screen came up. So, this is the second time in history I've *ucked this computer up to the point where booting off of the CD and using recovery console was necessary. Now its saying that the loginui file directory is corrupt/unreadable. Which is a bad thing. I'll see if I can continue tomorrow, but for now, I need a break.

Thanks for your efforts. And don't F*ck up your comp just to get the text. It's not that important.

Hello.
Is there any progress with this login, I mean "Logging off..." etc?
Relativity_17
Jan 5 2004, 09:20
Sorry, I haven't been able to find any documentation on how to alter that aspect of the login. I'll see what I can do tomorrow. School's starting back up, so...
a stupid question. how do i change my logon screen?

I use LoginLoader.
http://www.radfiles.com/logonloader/As for the logoff text, I'm still working on that... I've added the bitmap image for logging off, I'm now trying to make it show up.
*Edit: I can't seem to find any references to the specific string which is displayed during logoff. If anyone's familiar with the code behind these login screens, please contact me...
