Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the article mention that communications would be "tap" just at the ISP level?

Quote -

The FBI has made a proposal to the FCC that would require all Internet Providers ...

Yeah configure, only the ISP that means that all of us that are not on USA will be safe?
[david]

if such a thing does take place... I encourage everyone of you including myself to help fail this project by talking about terrorist stuff ! lol tongue.gif
Daem0hn
nope, they can do it anywhere, because microsoft servers are based in US and any traffic they get can be intercepted and have these laws applied to it

its gay, very gay, might catch a few pedos tho, good for somethings, bad for most

nuggetman
roflololol they want to put backdoors in an MS product lol they're probably already there cuz M$ sux lolol

...sorry couldn't resist rofl.gif

Anyway... this seems kinda dumb... if the FBI wiretaps the big names they'll just resort to running private Jabber servers for illegal activities

Better to stop talking to people in America over MSN then as they will monitor your side of the conversation comming into the country. I presume that this has something to do with preventing terrorism.

Ads running for Bush accuse John Kerry of wanting to weaken the Patriot Act as if that's a bad idea. This is the kind of **** your Patriot Act gets you. Yeah... land of the free (except for when we need to trample your freedoms).
lostspyder
all this **** is just infringing on the rights of the persional user, the real criminals will always find a way, theres no stoping them.

This is crazy, what is the big deal about the internet how can someone control it?
Tim Dorr
Man, this is hilarious. I love however is soooo quick to turn on the government and bitch at them for extending something they already do to another medium. If the US government sucks so much, why don't you do something about it? It's a democracy for a reason: so your voice can be heard. Instead, all it seems like is everyone here yells at the government than turns around and does nothing. If you don't like this, DO SOMETHING. Don't sit on your fat ass listening to pop music getting fat off McDonald's in your sweatpants from Walmart. America: Land of the free (if we care enough to keep it free, that is).

And I have no problem with this. They can already order wiretaps on my phone. NSA is reading my emails, and has super computers powerful enough to break encryption (thought that encyrption wasn't NP-solvable? Think again!). I don't care if they're reading my emails. I don't have anything to hide. And it's not like someone is *actually* reading them. It's a computer looking for keywords, nothing more. Same in this case, as there is too much informatino to sift through by hand.

I don't think the government is the problem, it's the mentality of the people in the country...
Rolando
what about non US Citizens... what can they do ? except show their rejection sad.gif

Yeah, because no one's doing anything about it. If this country goes to shambles, it's your own damn fault because despite what you believe, you *do* have the power to change things. It's just that no one gives enough of a damn to get off their ass and actually make the difference. It's this self-destructive mentality of this nation's culture that gives the illusion of a lack of democracy.

Oh I forgot it was the FBI, maybe then they can't touch us swedes here in sweden smile.gif hope so.

If this get approved, whatever.. I will definitly switch to Linux.

i am doing things about it. i spent loads of time in anti-war marches before the war. nothing happens. stop bush marches when he visited london. nothing happened. but i can't vote for 2 and 1/2 years yet. realmad.gif and there are no really major political parties that have my views. the swp? cpgb? i don't think they've ever held a constituency.
TooPackShaker
ever heard of carnivore? they are already monitoring everything you do online anyway
PseudoRandomDragon
No, not all ISPs have carnivore. The ISPs that say "no comment" have carnivore. The ISPs that say they don't have it don't have it.

It does not bother me that the FBI wants this, what troubles me is the lack of control over how the FBI can use this power.

I'd normally agree with you, Timdorr, but the anti-war protests all around the world did sweet **** all to change the government decision...representative of the people my ass!

I didnt wanna say too much about this.....I'm as skeptical and paranoid as the next guy....lol.....but this makes me wonder about the future releases of window$ and its higher end security measures of Longhorn that I keep reading about. Not only that, but the closeness that M$ has with all levels of governments and how they kiss sweet a$$ and give them copies of their software and such. Maybe Einstein said it best when we said that everything is relative....here online this is reflected to the fullest.

Sure, this might be the FBI and such, and maybe us foreigners across the globe don't have or don't wanna stress about this too much, seeing that their grip isn't global....but it does have influence into every place you can think of.

To me, all this has been in a downward spiral since the "threat" of Y2K, which pretty much was a cash cow to most big companies....but thats just my opinion.

The fact remains that eventually our freedoms will be stripped away, along with privacy and all that. I'm sure I'll get some flack over this, and I don't mind at all. I might not be the most well read individual out there either but you can't tell me its a cow when it oinks that loud.....kiss the web as we know it goodbye, its only a matter of time kids.....
PseudoRandomDragon
THere is no doubt in my mind: DRM will be a major threat to privacy and computing rights. DRM does not always mean that, it can be as benign as activation. However, it is going to be used for greater evils. The TCPA chip scares me more. If I don't like DRM, I can just not use WinXP/Wronghorn/WMP7+. Thing is, TCPA is to be in new motherboards. A hardware version of DRM that I have no choice but to have. UGH!

This is one of the many reasons I am using Mandrake Linux. I think Linux is our only way out of this.

It has nothing to do with what operating system you're on. If you're using GAIM on Linux, it's not going to help because they want the backdoor at the server level, not the client level.

Protests aren't what I'm talking about. What I'm talking about is calling up your representative and getting in their face about the issues. It's seriously as easy as picking up the phone and giving them a call. But if you really want to get into it, you can visit them at your respective capitol. It's called lobbying; learn it and love it, because it's the most direct way to get what you want from your government.

privacy in us? are you joking... Right?
Trust
what a lot of rights are loosing the common ppl there in us... And the worse of all is that they dont note whats going on... Even more they think that the gov is doing right. To protect them... Nothing more far than this... Soon china will be more free than us, and the common ppl living in that country will think that they still free. After all, common ppl have nothing to hide, so, who cares about privacy... Huh?. Nobody, because the goverment is doing that for your safe, right... Little by little us will be like alcatraz, nobody can in, and nobody can gets out. And the ppl in there will be controlled by who knows... And this what you know... Who know what will have inside the next windows version... Nobody read the liltle fonts of the agreenment. So...
btw, I think if there is someone that wanna do something bad, never and ever will use a common/public service. Only common ppl do that. And the FBI knows that. Like many ppl in DC knows about before 9/11 happends (I dont wanna start a war in here, just read your politics and you will know what Im talking about, and always try to read a foreing source, they have no interest and a goverment behind).
Well, I hope you ppl (us ppl) be happy with a smile controled and drawded by your politics and the goverment of turn. This is the time where there is no return. Your 'machine' will be against you, and you dont know it wink.gif

f*ckin damm bassackwards bush and his a$$hole way of thinking. biggest royal dip, actually non royal. this is complete bull crap. i am more likely to be killed by a drive by shooting tomarrow than a f*ckin terrorist. and i live nowhere near a city. sickening that we can withstand our privacy being stolen. and scr@w greedy corp lastards like the riA$$holesAnony.

edit: i am voting against bush this election and if he gets in again ill loudly voice my complaints.

It bothers me that the FBI wants to have control over everything. MSN Conversations, Emails, Xbox Live, VoIP, What the hell are they thinking?

I've always been paranoid of MSN Messenger, and now I actually have a valid reason to be afraid. dry.gif
Now I have to speed up my search for a truly secure, Open Source IM Client.

I wonder if they can scan SSH2 Tunnels. Is it possible to scan VoIP Packets over an SSH2 Tunnel? shifty.gif
