1) can it play mp3's without third party software, if not is there free software that does
2) can it play mp3/voice ringtones ?
3)is it easy to send/recieve stuff from and to the phone (will the windows IR/BT connection options be enough or do u have to install software to transfer?) just so i can transfer images and stuff from/to another laptop with ir/bt. like a SE phone.
4) is it easy to find games/software and is the software powerful, not like t610 where the java apps aren't even allowed to talk thru ir port.

-It can play mp3 only with third party software. UltraMP3 is the best. Search it in yahoogroups. Try to search for symbian. (edit: you should have noticed that you cannot get stereo output from 6600 and I have not tried using headphones of any kind. you would only hear the music from the external speaker, which is dull, imho)
-You dont have to install software to install stuff over IR. You can send the SIS files over IR and the phone would install. Nokia Connection Suite is also anohter alternative.
-It cannot play mp3 ringtones. You have to convert them to wav,
-It is easy to find stuff. Try handango.com and various yahoo groups.

1) No you do need 3rd party software. Im not sure if there are any freeware. The sound is pretty poor for mp3 because the phone is mono.
2) It cant play mp3 ringtones without 3rd party software (but see point 1). Other ringtones all work fine - wav, midi all work.
3) Yes its pretty easy to send files both ways. From the phone when in the media browser or file browsers you just select send->via bluetooth and choose which device to send to. The Windows XP SP2 bluetooth is basic but it works.
4) The symbian OS means its the most powerfull phone out there. Hundreds of games and applications exist, best of all most are NOT Java. Checkout : http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/vi...ticle.php?id=67 it has small list of great freeware including doom :-). Because of bluetooth there are quite a few 2 or more player games.

I also advise you to download those programs, that may really help you

-SeleQ (a file manager with which you can go deeper than the internal file manager)
- PVPlayer (Video player, faster and less consuming than the RealOne Player)
- Killer Virus (Nice camera game)
- Lemonade Tycoon (A classic)
- ICQ Client from Handango (there are free clients as well but I could get them to connect. You may try your chance however. There is Agile, if you want to try)
- STAY AWAY FROM MOSQUITO Game. That sends SMSs while you are playing.

If you transfer your MP3 files over the Nokia Suite, the Suite automatically converts those to WAV files. So you are playing the wav files, not the MP3 files.
Toxicfume
I heard that you can convert the mp3s into some other nokia format(.amr or something?) and then it will be small and can be used as a ringtone. Or is there a 3rd party software that allows playing of mp3's as ringtones directly?

Also one more questions, which one has most(or more widely available) programs? The Symbian Series 60 OS(on the 6600 and other nokia models)? or the MS Smart Phone OS(on the SPV C500)?
aero9
yea i heard it can play upto 8bit 16khz mono wav sounds

that sucks

(convert a file in windows recorder and listen !!!)

thanks for the quick replys.

daimon
Symbian has more software, because it is more widely used. But that is for now.
Yes, you can convert the mp3s to amr (or very low quality wav) and play it that way. I never came across a program that would play the mp3 directly but let me look for it.

edit: I found out on all about symbian forums that converting mp3s to ogg vorbis really cuts their size considerably. then you could install a ogg vorbis controller (of course they are free, this ogg) and use those files as ringtones.
Toxicfume
Wow, that's even more awesome. I am planning to buy one of these nokia phones and want to know if the mono sound really bother you if you never used headphones anyways? Any other nokia phone that can play the tones are a higher rate+stereo?

The only reason I want an nokia series 60 phone over an Orange SPV C500 phone is because of the Symbian OS, they have some really neat programs for it, thus, more programs = nokia's can do more than the SPV C500 smile.gif
daimon
the sound quality would not be good enough for listening, it is hardly good for ringtone quality.

If you want to listen to mp3s and also have symbian, you can buy the old n-gage, not the new n-gage qd. If you are dying for mp3 but sacrifice from Symbian (not a smart thing to do), stick with 3300 or the new 6230.

Toxic fume: If you really want a good symbian os smart phone id suggest the upcomming se p910 or Moto a1000
both will be great, my choice would be the Se for 2.5 G(wifi, 256k colour screen and larger internal memory)
and the moto for 3G...

the nokias are still lacking somewhat

(i have the moto a925.. the model before the new a100 and it plays mp3 ringtones really well)

Yeah, sony ericsson p910 would be the ultimate choice. it also features 64mb internal memory as well as a memory stick port. It even has a qwerty keyboard on the back of its buttons.

the only problem with is that they are a little bit bulky and even some symbian stuff are specially designed for nokia phones (but some are also specially designed for sony ericsson p8XX AND P9XX.)
Enigma-Penguin
Actually you'll find alot of apps are now generically signed to uiq rather than just the
Sony Ericsson P800/900 Platforms... i have a ton of p800 signed programs on my motoa925
uiq is pretty versitile, you can make things work if you really want to and there are plenty of people out there figuring it out yes.gif
plus they still have java support (from memory) so your options arent exactly limited

ill stop the hijack now blush.gif
daimon
yeah, I heard of it but never thought I would do it myself.

Anyway, here in Turkey the phones are extremely expensive (you have to buy the phone from the electronic shops not from operator's shop. I had to pay 700 USD for Nokia 6600) so a new phone is just a dream for me
Toxicfume
The P910 is too expensive for me pinch.gif eventhough it's nice, a little bulky.

I am thinking to either just get the 6600 or 7610 or wait for the 6630.

Edit: daimon: wow, 700USD noexpression.gif
InsaneNutter
Ultra MP3 should play MP3's fine on a 6600.. i got it on my Ngage QD, i woudlnt say the sound qulaty is exactly brilliant though, look at www.lonelycatgames.com for more info

i reccomend you get Agile Messenger if you use MSN a bit... it lets you go on MSN, Yahoo, AIM and ICQ... also something called Jabber and QQ which ive never heard of, its free from http://www.agilemobile.com smile.gif

If you in to games there is a grate one called skyforce http://www.idreams.pl/skyforce/skyforce.html

it will also play the following ngage games but i guess thats kinda illegal as you gott crack them.. but i got an Ngage QD anyway biggrin.gif

Puyo pop
Tombraider
Pandemonium
Super monkey ball
Tony hawk's Pro Skater
Fifa 2004
NCAA 2003
Viltrual tennis
Moto GP
Rayman3
SonicN
Spiderman 2

I would get the 6600, you can do a lot with it.. good luck in choosing a phone smile.gif
Toxicfume
Thanks for the replies Insane, daimon and enigma penguin. I might just get the 6600, but it's sluggishness is whats holding me back, hope I can make a decision before the end of the week. shy.gif
ck2k01
id go with the 7610.

it does everything the 6600 does (+/= a couple games and apps), has no slowdown, and is way more stylish.

im still in LOVE with mine. even after a month, its still my favorite little toy.
blackhorse
Guys, I have used 6600, borrowed it for a day from my younger bro. He bought it in abt a month it was released. And I got to tell, its damn slow and delay is very noticeable. I was so ****ed off, that I returned it to him for my 6610. So think before you buy or wait for some other model from nokia.
aero9
6620 is the answer they have put a fater processor and more ram.
but i think i will cost a lot more...NS
looks similar
altezza
I have 6600 myself and so far I'm quite impressed on the phone features but I am not gonna use 6600 for playing mp3s anyway. My friend has 7610 and I know it looks more stylish, but it's kinda bit weird in design. 7610 has got all features that 6600 have but 7610 got 4 times zoom compared with 6600's 2 times zoom and up to 8 mins of video recording compared to 6600's 10-15 secs video recording, and yeah finally it's also mp3 player with stereo sound. Overall it's not much different than 6600 but I'm very happy with my own 6600...I love its chubby yet elegant look smile.gif
