I've had the same problems with my setup as well on 21.81 and 21.85 drivers. I have a Creative GF2 GTS. I always get my lockups when using the desktop never during game play. I'm using the new style XP GUI, not tried reverting to old style yet.
21.83 drivers link has been removed from Nvidia's download site today. Perhaps they know of issues with them?
I try with WinME and have not encounter the problem... You guys using it with WindowsXP?

Yes I'm using XP.
I'm sure r00tcracker is too from his description of the failure.
I've been using the 21.83 drivers , i had probs with the crashes too with the 81 and 85 drivers. Its been fine with the 83 drvers and my geforce2 mx400, i'm returning it for a geforce 2 ti this week hoping to see big performance gains
It must be the driver because "nv4_disp.dll"
is the driver.
It seems strange because I have a TNT2 on XP and have had no such trouble. Maybe you should try going back to the 12.41 Detonator3 drivers

I might try the old style Windows GUI interface instead of the new XP style next.
I'd have rolled back to the 21.83 drivers, but since Nvidia seem to have removed them from their download site I'll probably hold off and see what happens there next. Perhaps there's another set on the way.
No sign of any newer beta on
http://www.3dchipset.com yet.
I just looked before my last post 21.83 drivers are still on nvidias page with a working link.

I don't know if it's the Det 4 drivers doing this but i've had this problem lately where the system just restarts sometimes. I'll be sitting here reading a review off some site and it just restarts. It does that once every now and then watching movies too and it's starting to **** me off. I'm gonna go back to the 14.70 drivers (i used those for weeks and my system never crashed on me once) and then i'll know what's going on here. Thanx for giving me the idea because i couldn't figure out what the hell was wrong. Hopefully this is the problem and i'll have a stable system for once!

I only get that (bluesreen/shutdown) when using the "s3tc-fix" when I'm overclocking.
i've had this problem with almost all drivers.. i have tried D3s all the way to D4s.. the only improvment now that windows doesn't crash on me for no reason... it only freezes when i leave a game.. specially Quake 3. and i have to restart manually.. i believe it's something with the VIA chipest... that's the only thing i can think of. i have installed xp in 2 machines using Dual AMD using amd chipsets and no crashes at all..
this crashes only happens under winxp.. under win2k.. no crashes at all.. weeks without restarting with win2k!!!

I have a
Geforce 2MX
or
Geforce 3
PIII 733
256MB Ram
SB LIVE
I had to go back to windows 98 because of that problem with the spontanous reseting in XP GUI. The thing is that it never seems to reset in DX 8 mode (ie in a game). It has the same problem in both GUI's. The bad thing for me is even when I do a roll back I still seem to keep one of the files which causes the reset. Now Im back in Win98 until I can fix up (ie format) windows xp.

Great question.
I can confirm that my issues are on a VIA chipset (v4.32 all-in-1) not v4.34.
I've got an Abit KT7A, 1.33 Ghz Athlon, 512MB PC-133.
Could upgrading the All-in-1 drivers help I wonder?
i installed the via v4.34 and didn't have any system crashes.. except when exiting quake3... and only crash on quake3 not in any other game.. (serious sam, scarifice, UT...) .. give it a try might help..... and my sys specs are
Dual 1Ghz @ 1.13Ghz
1GB DDR RAM PC2400
Iwill DVD266-R (Pro266 chipset) mobo (USB Disabled..!!)
Asus V8200 GF3 Deluxe
Nvidia 21.83
IBM 30GB
80GB WD

SB live 5.1 Pla'
.... enuff for now
AMD Athlon 650
ASUS k7m mobo

512 ram
win xp corp
running 21.83 drivers and having no problems
where as with 21.81's everytime i played a game it would freeze.
so far no problems with the new drivers.
Does anyone know which drivers work for sure? I've seen everything from 21.81 all the way up to the new (beta?) 22.50 drivers from nVidia crapping out. I even went back to Microsoft's drivers (nv4.dll, not nVidia's nv4_disp.dll) and its STILL screwed up.
Where can I get the old Det3 drivers? And does anyone know if they make OpenGL and DirectAnything work again?
I've read on other forums that the SoundBlaster Live! drivers are the actual problem. Here's what I've done so far:
Tried ALL version of Detonator drivers V3 & V4 - nothing
Tried different SoundBlaster drivers (Microsoft & SB) - nothing
Tried all Microsoft drivers straight across the board - nothing
I have an Intel chipset, so its not a VIA thing...
I don't know. Something somewhere must have screwed a system file or mucked up the registry. I've tried every combination I can think of and I'm still getting lockups/BSOD. Now I'm going to start looking at programs like Tweak XP and Norton AntiVirus and stuff that continues to run all the time. I don't know where else to look.
I'm lost. I just hope someone at nVidia is aware of this and will at least have a patch out soon if nothing else.
I found that rolling back the driver to the original 12.40 installed with XP has been 100% stable.
I've just had my boot disk fail and am sending it off for replacement and so I've now got a fresh XP installation again.

Yep, trying them now. Doesn't fix the lockup/BSOD problem... I've given up. I came
>< this close to buying an ATI vid card today simply because I'm fed up.
Anyone else have any input as to what might be causing this?

Well guys, i have the same problem
I have a DELL c810 laptop with a geforce2 go and my system reboots almost 20 times a day, i already tried all drivers available with no results, even the certified ones form dell.
It seems that nvidia as its hands full of work to do. Waiting for the next version of drivers.
I forgot, the problem is always nv4_disp.dll file, this asshole dll.
Hope a fix will be out really soon
Well im not sure but it does seem odd that we
all have Geforce 2s with SB Live. Im acutally wondering
if its a Creative thing. Does anyone out there have
a SoundBlaster Audigy, I will be getting one soon.
Mind you I also have the VIA based chipset.
Now that I acutally thing about it, it could be
any combination of the three.
VIA
Geforce
SB Live
Nah thats not it.
Its more likely
Geforce
SB Live
Yeah that sounds better. Im sure about that one. So I guess
the only answer is to wait until Microsoft or Creative solve the problem. I would not be relying on creative if I was you BTW.

In many games my PC crash, and i get this message:
DEVICE DRIVER GOT STUCK IN AN INFINITE LOOP.
NV_disp.dll
Can someone help me ?
I have a NVIDIA VANTA / VANTA LT 16 MB and i tried all detonato 4 drivers .
Someone in another forum posted this about the nVidia lockup/BSOD fiasco:

I had a problem simalar to everyones problems here. It turned out that all of the 3D **** on my card it fried so I can't run with any hardware acceleration either otherwise my card just filps out. If you email a nvidia technition they will send you the list of registry keys that are associated to your cards and the only way to COMPLETELY uninstall your drivers before adding in new ones is through the registry. Each time you installed/rolled back/reinstalled a new key was created each time. Give that a shot.
However, he neglected to say
how to write to nVidia's tech support as they don't have a direct e-mail address to tech support on their site nor did he post any of the keys that need to be removed.
If anyone gets their hands on these reg keys,
PLEASE post them here. Also, he didn't say whether removing these keys and installing a Det3/4 driver from scratch fixes the problem. None of us had a problem in the first place until one day out systems simply started locking up and BSODing.
Any further input? Apparently this problem has been around since WinXP RC2 was released.
i run a geForce 256 GTS, and a SB Live Platinum (the old one). and i haven't had any problems since i installed the 21.85 dets. the only problem i've had in xp is that my usb doesn't work before i log into windows, and if i have something plugged into a usb port before i log in, it doesn't even work in windows. so now i have to use the ps/2 adapter for my mouse, i guess it's no big loss but it would be a nice thing to have fixed.

It's been solved. The problem for me was the VIA 686B Chipset and the SB Live card. I knew it had an issue but the issue only started lately. I've taken that card out now and it's been running perfect now but i don't have my wonderful SB Live DE 5.1 card so now i can't get Dolby Digital when watching my DVD movies. I'm gonna end up getting a new board so it's all good but i gotta wait a while before i can get that board.
It's not the GeForce & SB Live because i'm still using that combo and it's working fine now! So all you guys/girls with the VIA 686B chipset and SB live cards, Take out the card or see if your MOBO manufacture have a BIOS update!
BTW i'm using the newer 22.80 drivers and i love them! It's finally looking like the XP look and it got a new icon in the advanced settings. It runs faster too when trying to access those settings! Who Hoo!... looks 3D ish!
Um... I don't think I have a VIA anything and I'm still having this trouble. Here's a list of what I do have. If I'm missing a VIA chipset somewhere, please let me know.
Intel SE440BX-2 Motherboard
Intel Celeron 400a 400 MHz
Diamond Multimedia Viper V770 Non-Ultra (nVidia TNT/TNT2 Chipset)
Hauppauge Win-TV PCI card (could this be it?)
Creative SoundBlaster PCI512 (The card just under the Live! series)
SMC EZ Card 10/100 PCI SMC1211TX Net card
Microsoft USB IntelleMouse Explorer
I tried pulling the sound card out, rebooting, dumping all drivers, reinstalling it all... nothing works. I don't see VIA anything in my system. Its all Intel, SB or nVidia (except the Hauppauge, which I think is their own chipset).
Clues?
Any word one these so-called reg keys that can completely remove the drivers or anything about Via/nVidia/SB?
Ya can't tell me everyone's problem suddenly went away.
