I have a ps2 with GTA:SA (had it since Vice City), and I've hardly touched it. I just don't like playing on a blurry low-res TV with 5 year old hardware. I barelly played Vice when it came out on ps2, but when it was on PC I enjoyed it a lot more, less fiddly controls and better graphics.
I prefer a mouse and keyboard to a controller, it's probably what I'm used to. A controller is just awkward for anything other than a platformer/sports sim
Plus you can mod PC games and play them online. (granted, console games are now looking pretty tempting due to the inbuilt HDD's and onlineplay options.. make them properly HDTV compatible and we'll be set)
Consoles do have their place though, for a quick mindless game with friends when they come over.

I own (and play) an XBOX, Gamecube & my PC - just finished Half-Life 2, will be picking up KOTOR2 for my XBOX soon & Metroid Prime 2 for my Gamecube - a good game is a good game. I couldn't care less what system it is on.
is this thread still going on?!?!?
i think we've established that its not that we refuse to buy 'em and that there are very valid points for us not buying consoles, just as some of us like and/or prefer consoles
its not how we like to play.... its the fact that we're bunch of boring C*NTS with nothing better to do than sit around and play games thats important!!

I just had had a thought after reading a few posts by PC gamers wondering about the PC release of GTA: San Andreas.
It seems to happen fairly often when a great game comes out for a console (GTA, MGS2, Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, etc. etc.). PC Gamers say, "When's it coming out for PC?" "Why doesn't 'so-and-so' make a PC version?" and other such comments that show a distress over a game not being released for Windows.
A question to you PC gamers. Why is it you'll spend hundreds upon hundreds for PC upgrades so you can play the newest PC game, but refuse to drop so much as $120 for a preowned console to play the newest PS2, GCN or XBOX game? You'll buy new memory and a new video card so you can play Half-Life 2 the second it comes out, but at the same time, you complain that not enough of the great console games are released for PC.
Just today I saw a post about someone saying how he's just going to have to wait a year for the PC version of GTA: San Andreas. If he wants to play it so much, is $120 or even less for a preowned PS2 really too high a price to play the game now?
I just hope it's not due to some kind of "PC is better than consoles" fanboy attitude, because if the game isn't going to come out on PC, that argument doesn't hold much water.
Just curious.

Last console I owned was the PS1. Built a pc myself and never went back to consoles.
im a gamer since my parents bought me an intellivision back when i was a kid. since then i had nes, snes, genesis, gamegear, virtualboy, gameboy, tg16, suprgrafx16, ps1,gamecube and pc. no need to just stick with a pc or console only. if you do that you'll miss out on some really good games. great games are on pc and great games are on all 3 consoles.

My favorite genre is RPGs, and quite frankly, the vast majority of PC RPGs I've played have sucked- a lot. I'm just not a fan of the style. I get bored of MMORPGs in three minutes. Console ones, on the other hand, are fun and engaging- take Star Ocean, Final Fantasy, or Xenosaga as examples.
i will disagree with that some of my fav. RPGs are for PC, the 1st 3 fallouts ok that is about all the RPG i have but i love them. the truth my mom cant speen $500 to upgrade a computer. my computer is ok, it cant play alot of the console games. my graphics arent that great and my xbox Hard drive is better then my computer harddrive. the PC have 1 thing that a console doesnt have i can get maps mods and other thing without doing much. games like star craft,AOE's, and my fallouts. i dont like joysticks, the mouse is sh*tty when it comes to FPS games.

My reasons for preferring PC gaming over console gaming:
Shorter load time.
Better graphics
FREE online play on 90% of games (no £$€ xbox live crap)
PATCHES!!! (PS2/GC cannot give you patches!)
Game Mods! (How much fun is garrys mod for HL2?! this does not happen on PS2 GC or Xbox!)
Higher Resolution! - who wants to play at 480i/p when you can play at 1080i/p with DX9.0c ???
Cheaper - PC games hit the market cheaper HL2 + CSS = £30 (on day 1) average PS2/Xbox game £45.00 on day one.
ok so lets recap cheaper better performance better graphics online play shorter load time and large communitys supplying mods and mini games for our favourite titles. these things make PC gaming much better.

I'd say that currently I am at the equal mark,
I am looking at this next gen of consoles to push it more towards the consoles in terms of graphical quality vs price and the gameplay will be essentially the same on both platforms.
I respect everyone's point of view, but please explain this to me, I don't mean to flame, my questions will be just that, objective questions waiting to be answered, as I'm only looking for enlightnment:

2) i want the best, best graphics, best gameplay, best sound (and consoles can't provide that)

I'll give you graphics and sound, but how can consoles not be able to have the best gameplay? Please don't say it's the keyboard/mouse, cause that's just preference, and applies to some types of games. Personally, I can't play comfortably with a keyboard/mouse, and trust me, I've tried, and the result was Deus Ex collecting dust in my room, no matter how good the game is.

Well, controllers are molded for your hands, plus they are a lot more confortable and intuitive. Keyboards ARE better for some games, but for most of them, a controller is better, otherwise they would have never released controllers for PC.

*Realizes this is a very old thread* But... in reply to the original topic and all, people want that PC version because they like using their thousand dollar PCs which can run such games much better than consoles can. Look at the amount of quality PC games that are basically PC-only, and have incredible graphics and gameplay because of it. Now, I know such high profile games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 have (or are getting) their own respective console versions. However, no matter what you say, they are just stripped-down versions of their PC bigger brothers. The controls generally don't fare well in the move, nor the graphics. Now, the same can be said for Console to PC ports, but the reason for this is more laziness on the developers parts rather than an actual hardware limitation. Now this may be different for awhile when the next gen consoles come out, but it wont last.
You also have to realize a console setup can be just as expensive as a PC. Factor in a high-end TV (HDTV or otherwise...), a speaker setup, the console + cables, games, controllers, memory cards, etc... I mean, it does come out to a helluva lot unless you already happen to have that TV or speakers... Now, in my case, I already have everything I need in my PC, which can also multitask and do a lot more than any console can. I will therefore logically stick with my somewhat expensive PC, at least until new consoles are released and I get an interest in them.
The only thing holding back computer gaming is the game developers unwillingness to develop for the PC. Examples? Well, ever seen a current-gen Nintendo game on the PC (not including console emulators, of course...). Halo 2 even? Sure, they COULD run on PCs, but consoles are easier to develop for (less variables included) so they stick with what is easy, not minding the obvious bottleneck in quality that they are entering.
I have nothing AGAINST consoles though, and I fully intend to buy at least one of the next gen consoles.

Because I can play a game and quit and do something else. On a console I have to quit the game and go over to the pc and then do stuff. I like the all in one factor.
Plus, when I think of consoles I think of kids and teenagers. Also no mouse and keyboard. And if it did have one it would still be too much trouble, for me anyway.
I just don't like them in general, to be honest I hope they burn in hell. You did want honesty right?

Jul 23 2005, 04:51
ok, the reasons I am not going to get a console to play one game, but spend 100 bucks on new ram to play BF2 is....
1. Mouse/Keyboard >> Controller (for FPS mosly...but I mostly play FPS games)
2. I have no TV... ($300 for one that is worth playing games on)
3. I do however, have a top 10, 19" CRT monitor (according to PC world, as compared to other ones in the same generation)
4. PS2 can't run Trillian for when I am not gaming. (wait, is there linux for any of the consoles? I dunno....but you can't type with a dual shock controller

)
5. The massive sub that is sitting beside my feet doesn't work to well with a TV
6. No Xbox live fees to play online.
Because PC Gaming > Console.

Well I too am locked into the PS2 for my anime needs. i upgrade my pc to stay in the loop of the technology cycle. I learnt this lesson a long time ago. You fall too far behind you gotta restart from scratch again. Besides that I need to have control of game settings right down to video settings and audio. I've seen to many xbox games stutter alot because you couldn't turn down a certain aspect of texture control or view distance.
Either way i buy them for the kick of it I mostly play the games from ntsc-j

QUOTE(dreamthief @ Nov 21 2004, 05:59)
Console are kinda limiting for me. My arguments are, PC allows more genre to be played rather than console.
For example, rts games like StarCraft, WarCraft series. Try playing that on a console, even with the keyboard or mouse add on. It would just be a pc gaming in a console form. If i want to play football games like EA Fifa, i can just plug in a joypad and enjoy it like i would on a console.
Downside on pc is, you have to spend some hefty sum for upgrades. Since most i believe, use computers to get their work done, i would say the upgrade is worthwhile.

I'm thinking this: for upgrading, you really only have to spend 100 bucks on a graphics card to play a game and make it look like it does on a PS2/XBOX. They are low powered machines. If you want to crank up the quality to max on a PC of course you have to spend more, but on consoles it's always that limitation of graphics/performance trade-off. There isn't many good games that come out for PC... there is maybe one good game every 6 months or so, and it is sometimes a long wait. For consoles there are tons of games left and right, but they aren't as breathtaking as the PC games. You have a computer anyways, and it's fun to upgrade even though it's pricey.

Basically, for the moddability, online gameplay, and updates.
Plus, some of us spend $2000 and many hours building/tweaking the rig, so it'll be satisfying to get a game that can show its full potential (and of course, its upgradable also)

Here is my take..
I have played many games on my PC. There are few games that I have put many hours in.
Diablo, all UT, Doom 3, and some old school RPGS back in the day. Civ & Red Alert.
While it is true all the PC versons of games that I have for the PS2 or xbox look better on my computer. The reason I own a PS2 & xbox is the PC doesn't offer as many options as consoles do.
Any person who claims to be a gamer and likes RPG is high on crack if they think PC's offer better titles RPG wise.
I refuse to play FPS games on Ps2 And Xbox becuase I am way faster with a keyboard and mouse then a controller. That and the games are smoother and play better especially in a real multiplayer invornment.
And if your a fan of fighting games good luck with your PC. You'll probably never play Tekken or Soul Calibur. And it's truly a shame your missing out on all the great games you have missed out on becuase you think the console market has nothing to offer you.
Meanwhile I'll go back to my computer that can play every game yours can play and if i should choose I can play and of my Ps2 xbox or the other handfull of consoles i own.

Maybe its from all those years of pc gaming, but i just cant get the hang of the gamepad as well as i can the mouse/keyboard combo

Unlike Most, I've found other uses for my PC. Getting it to render some game, and having it look as if there is some form of rendering problem, with great hardware; compared to a console with perfect specs is not my thing.
I sometimes don't see how people argue that a keyboard/mouse has better control than a console's native controller. It really doesn't make much sense.

Let's see... maybe because it was the PC Gamer and the PC that developed gaming and graphics to the level it is today? Gaming has always been pushing the envelopes of graphics and processor capability. Not to mention, upgrading a PC is as simple as replacing a part, whereas you have to chuck your old console when the next rotation comes around. It may be expensive, but you gotta pay to play (especially at 1600x1050 full AA and textures). Oh, and then there's the fact that I can alt-tab out of a game to handle surfing, chat, music... and there's also the fact that I can load whatever I want on my PC without some lame patch from M$ killing my mod (at least for now).

I have a PS2 and a Gaming PC. I don't see either type dying. The whole thing about console's replacing a pc always comes up until pc's shoot past them and vice versus.
Each have there place. FPS play much better on the pc since you can upgrade the video and natively support keyboard / mouse compared to fps on consoles.
There are a lot of games that do better in console / controller format.
A true gamer will play the games they like on what ever system supports it and they will get newer pc or newer console to go where the games where.
The way I look at it, Star Ocean Till the End of Time sounds / looks great on my HDTV with dolby surrond sound and Doom 3 is awesom on the pc with head phone with the lights turned off.

That's not going be how it is soon. With the next-gen consoles. The XBOX360 will already rival most gaming PCs. And the PS3..well even more..
Revolution will be different. ^_^.
So what the PC will be good at then is multitasking. Actually the reason why I prefer playing games on the PC vs the consoles is for a couple reasons.
1) Modding. It's fun to mod and brings life into games I otherwise would've stopped playing a long time ago.
2) Multitasking ability

I'm more of a console gamer, the only games that I ever really dug on the PC were Half Life and the GTA series. Consoles are better for most games like racing , platformers and fighting types, IMO and I'm a big fan of the racing ones, especially Wipeout and Ridge Racer.

I went out and rented 5 of the top 10 games, just to see the best it had to offer.
Please! Can it get more simplistic? Graphics are HORRIBLE! On par with what the PC offered about 5 years ago, and I'm running it on a 53" HDTV!
The only game I moderatly enjoyed was Tiger Woods 2005. But it's so simplistic on the xbox, compared to the PC version. I was shocked on how bad the courses looked. It was nice, though, to play a round of golf without all the "sim" features.
