I've just put in place the code for thread ratings. You can now rate topics to encourage good posting habits (or discourage bad ones). Any topic requires 10 votes before you can see it's rating, so that someone (or someones) can't take over the vote. You get one vote per thread, so make it count!
Let me know any bugs you find, but it should be secure against haX0ring and such

Uh, is there a way to make the rating system forum specific? I for one do not see the point in having ratings in Neowinian Milestones.

Is that what that spiffyness being added was just a few minutes ago?

Nov 29 2004, 05:55
cool. i loved the spiffyness message you put up while adding the code.
Do we only see the rating once we get into the thread?
- EDIT -
Nevermind, now there's a rating column.
The graphic is kinda.. meh.

I keep seeing this in the RATING Column, I also see
4 and then 3 ... etc..
Also tim, the bar at the top doesn't make much sense to me
block - "Thread Rating"
Can you put a number on the graphic or write the average out?

Can you put a number on the graphic or write the average out from the calc and put in the RATING column and up top there?
*Braces self for all the threads asking why there are thumbs at the top of topics*
And OPaul, it shows the rating on the index when it has 10+ votes

Good job! Keep it up!

Tried it already but getting some time to get used to it
One small aesthetic suggestion:
How about putting the rating column to the right of replies and views, not before.
Something like this might be better and more informative:
Votes For This Thread: X

Yah and a number to signify the actual Average on the graphic would be cool.

I may just change it to the correct number of thumbs. Yay? Nay?

Nay. I like the idea of an e-penis....oops, e-meter

Nah, I like the meter look.

how about using the neowin progress bar (i.e .whe nsearching etc) as rating bar/graphics?
Nay... too many thumbs. Maybe something that fit with the theme a bit more and with total votes and accurate ratings in text beside it.

It was worth the few minutes of downtime.
eh.. I'm not sure I see how this is going to encourage good posting habits. If that is the intention wouldn't it be more appropriate to add a rating to specific users or their posts and not threads?

rating users would cause alot of fuss methinks. the more people "downgrade" a user the more aggressive he'll become imo.
^ good call

User-rating would most likely promote more "user-bashing"

Perhaps. Then maybe just make it so you can give positive ratings to a user if you found their information helpful. Say for every 5 good ratings you get a point, something like that. It's just right now as it stands all I see this thread rating doing is adding another column to the forum.

What happends if the thread goes to the crapper?
I mean this thread is a 5 IMO.. but there may be threads in which I vote in the beginning then later on they turn to suck

why is my quote box empty.

Will we get to set a rating threshhold for topics with 10+ votes that are under a certain rank?

When you quote something, quotes are removed and Tim didn't have any text so it showed up empty.

That's probably going to be more a case for the moderating staff. They'll keep an eye on things and cut out all the crap.
Ok, here is a photoshop suggestion for the layout. I think this is slightly more efficient looking, and also doesn't make it seem that the thread is prioritised by it's rating.

No, I don't plan on it right now, as that would mess with some already delicately optimized SQL statements.

why not use stars or thumbs as rating? i bet 5 stars would look neat on the forum index

Nov 29 2004, 06:30
I was wondering if you could setup an area or link like the new/active post link for just highly ranked post. I think that would be kewl. A place where only the top ranked post get in would make for some quality reading, not that all neowin isn't already.
Seems to me the only threads that are going to get rated are the ones that are already hot topics, which already are displayed with a red icon.
