I'm wondering whether if I buy a USB 2.0 riser card and install my cable modem's USB 2.0 drivers (Motorola SB4100) will I experience even faster internet speeds :evil: ? i know this won't speed up the modem itself but it might (i think) speed up the transfer rate from the cable modem to the computer.



i'm also curious cuz i'm using a 10/100 network HUB (not a router/switch) that's "capable" of handling high speed internet. maybe an increase in data transfer rate along the USB connection will speed things up even more...





any advice, suggestions?

Hmm, i guess it's worth a shot but does you modem say, "USB Hi Speed" or something? Your modem is (prolly) UBS 1.1 so the USB 2.0 controller will slow down to a max of 11Mbit/s (USB 1.1) try it out tho, i was wondering that too so i plugged my Webcam into my USB 2.0 ports and it wasn't any sharper so there goes that idea...

well Motorola posted new drivers up for my cable modem model for USB 2.0 capability so i'm figuring it's already enabled for USB 2.0

Cable max speed is 10mbps

USB 1/1.1 max speed is 12mbps



There is absolutely nothing to be gained by USB 2, especially since USB1 1/1.1 is more than needed to begin with.

lol, no, I dont think you will be getting the 11 or 12 megs that USB 1.1 gives you. Hook it up via a lan card, it will not use as much CPU time and you have 100mbs worth of bandwith if you are worried about that.

If your modem is USB only, I'd do USB 2.0 simply because it's a better protocol with less CPU overhead than USB 1.0/1.1 is.



BUT, if your modem supports LAN cable, spending the $50 on a nice 3Com or Intel NIC instead of a USB 2.0 card will make you a MUCH happier person. Especially since you can keep the LAN card virtually forever, and it'll do 100mbps quite nicely when fiber comes to your neighborhood in a few years.

Friend had his system on USB with his SB4100 damn thing crawled! switched him over to an ethernet card, bang much faster!

my Soyo mobo has on onboard NIC which im using for connectivity to my workgroup/network. so i'm assuming there will be no problems if there are two NIC cards installed and in use at the same time rite??
