I used to have a 36" vertical. But no way I could get that now. There was a guy in my class who had 42". He jumped on a trampoline like 4hrs a day for an entire summer to strengthen his legs though. Pretty nuts.

I had around a 32 inch standing vertical leap in High School. I was around 6'1 and 150 pounds at 14-15 and I played as a undersized small forward in school. Vertical leap is overrated, and at 5'9" i would think you would be playing point guard. If that's the case learn to handle the ball, drive, and dish. Quick hands on D. Those skills are going to help you much more than being able to jump over people. Guys like John Stockton, Muggsy Bogues (5'3"), Isiah Thomas were all smaller players who couldn't jump but were great players based on their ability to run an offense.

Also spend some time doing squats in the gym... and practice with ankle weights. The latter will really help out with your leaping ability. smile.gif

I'm 6'2" and have about a 24" vertical. If only I had another inch or 2, I could dunk.

we used jump shoes (they make you walk on your toes all the time) and plyometrics (sp?). Most people just work their calves to jump higher but most of your power comes from your quads (about 70 percent?)...so work those muscle groups also.

Two foot ankle hop (low intensity)
keeping your feet together and remaining in one place hop up and down using only your ankles and calves. Concentrate on getting as high as you can and exploding off the ground as soon as you land.
Rim Jumps (medium intensity)
Stand under a basketball rim. Jump up touching the rim (or net or whatever) with alternate hands. Concentrate on getting as high as you can and exploding off the ground as soon as you land.
Box to Box jumps (high intensity)
Place two boxes that will support your weight about 3 feet apart. Standing on one box step (NOT JUMP) off to the ground and immediately jump back up to the other box. Turn around and repeat. Obviously the difficulty of this exercise is increased as the height of the boxes are increased. Once again concentrate on getting as high as you can and exploding off the ground as soon as you land (notice a pat tern here?)

In all the above exercises you are using your body weight and gravity to load the muscle before contraction. The forces you generate are much larger than could be safely accomplished using conventional resistance (read weights) exercises. It is true these forces only exist for a brief amount of time, but they still stress the muscle which is the point.

Also these exercises can be combined. For example try jumping off a box before jumping up to the rim.

Something to be noted is to watch out how you practice strengthening muscles for jump height. I had a friend rip his achilles by trying to improve jump height. That is the most disgusting sound you'll ever hear, and the most painful, or so I'm told, since I didn't have the pain, I just heard the snap. sick.gif

ouch...yea i wouldn't want to hear that

Around 38 inches... I'm 5'9". Normally quicker guys have higher verticals (and guys with high verticals are quick)... but meh, I'm sure you knew that, so I'll just shut up.
DrunkenMaster
I'm 5'7 and I used to be able to touch the rim on a 10 ft net. But I haven't played basketball in a long time....
