I would like to know this too.
When I have tried doing it they usually install in the wrong location and are not seen (Fedora/Redhat).
Plus how is the ./configure prefix= command mean't to look like? How do I search for KDE's location?
Sometimes it complains "can't find QT".
in gnome its simple drag drop thingy.....
shud be same in kde too. did any one tried dragging the theme file into kde-theme window?

In GNOME it is drag and drop if the theme "engine" is already installed.
In KDE I don't know if it is drag and drop. Almost everything at KDE-LOOK.org suggests a compile, or install of a binary designed for SUSE.
I think VIP is trying to install a "style" not a theme. A theme is something different.

There's really only 2 place KDE should be installed. /opt/kde-3.x.x or /usr. Depending on your distribution, it could be in either. Easiest way to check is probably doing a
whereis startkde

Ok, found a theme I liked, and i'm getting this message ...
checking for libz... configure: error: not found.
Possibly configure picks up an outdated version
installed by XFree86. Remove it from your system.
Check your installation and look into config.log

any clue?

libz might not be on your system at all. Do a google for it and install it in the best method for your system. additionally I have to manually include the prefix to my kde install path. you can not know your install path and run configure with this command if it won't install the theme to the right directory (it won't show up in the control center)
./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix`
those are back-ticks not apostrophes

Thanks kongit, that configure command is what I needed.
