I would like to see the 3 letter-word + search thing taken away. such as last night i was searching for the BMW with the soccer ball fallen on top of it thread... BMW wasnt long enough. or someone might search CDR, or even having ONE word under 3 letters gives you an error.... just annoying if u ask me

That would be nice, with all the 3 letter tech terms out there.

... or 'MSN' as happened to me 2 days ago.

I don't think you can, as MySQL has a set minimum of 3 characters for fulltext searching.
Sometimes adding a * after the three letter term will help, but I haven't been 100% successful with this yet.

yeh and if ur searching Danger Den, it won't let you, as it contains 'Den' in it
Joel posted this a few days ago (I think),
search for small words using google
open google and in the search box type
CODE
(search keyword) site:www.neowin.net
eg
CDR site:neowin.net would give you
this
I agree, you can't even do a search for "HL2" or "MP3"!

the google search is the best way to do it i'm afraid. The 3 chars search min restriction is something that's hard coded either at IVB level or MySQL (guessing IVB).

Is there a way to setup a keyword search bookmark for this in FireFox by any chance? anyone?

It's SQL... if you search for this you'll find another thread about this.

in that case, could there be a link on the site which has search using google (other sites have it) so you type in like MSN and it automatically fills in the search only neowin.net thing in the search... like the knoppiz forums have this
No, this has been discussed in the Subscriber Forum, secret reason why though.

It cannot be done due to what Magoo said, it's hard coded into the mySQL I believe, and is unchangable, and I think its something to do with Search strings have to be longer for mySQL to recognise and locate information from the DB.

Obviously, the point is whether or not it is actually possible.

mySQL is not the only DB program IPB runs on.

And it would bring on lots of slower times, it annoys me sometimes, but just improve your search. Also, if the search strings typed in where long or was very popular, it would slow down the server loads, because it has to shift through so much, I believe.

It says right there that it doesn't apply for FULLTEXT searching. We would have to change MySQL's configuration, drop and re-add the post table index for FULLTEXT to support lower than 4 letters. I need to upgrade Neowin to MySQL 4.1 and do this anyways, but the index size could be massive (and therefore slower)...
Edit: Well, 4.1 is installed. I'l have to try the reindex later tonight.
