Since Gmail now has POP support, I wanted to get the Inbox Monitor for Gnome to check my mail for me. I've put in my details, as per the Gmail help, but it doesn't work.

I put the mouse over the applet, and it tells me that it couldn't connect to the internet. I've even forwarded port 995, which is in the Gmail help thing. But it still doesn't work

Does that Gnome client support ssl connections? If so, make sure that it's enabled.

I have no idea. There's no option for it.

Probably not then. Gmail only allows SSL connections to its POP servers.

yeah... I downloaded Mail Notification 1.0 which looks like a good app, but I can't get that working right either.

I've installed libsoup, as to get the Gmail part of the program to configure, but I also need gmime working. I've downloaded both 2.0.14 and 2.1.9, and compiled both. Then I tried compiling Mail notification again, but it's still telling me that gmime isn't installed, or it can't find it.
