You could always wait until january, when the rumored iPod flash will be announced. I'm guessing it will be $99.99 US for 256MB model.
My daughter has the FL100; the expansion is a nice option. SD cards are dirt cheap these days.

any of the creatives.

i have the 256mb muvo tx which is exactly the same as the Nx without the radio i believe.its good for the price.
i'd recommend a creative... those were one of my first mp3 players.

I've just bought the Creative muvo 512mb TX FM
the size I need. I almost bought the ipod mini but it's just too damn expensive

I got a Sandisk 512mb at Best Buy for $119USD. I dunno if it was on sale or a price mistake but it rang up as that price. Its excellent for the money.

i got a Lexar 1GB SD Card for $60 not too long ago (sometime in november). just get a cheap player with an SD slot and enjoy

whats the cheapest 256mb pen-drive mp3 player money can buy? i'd personally just go for that... the difference between current flash-based players is small... your paying for compatibility with WMA-DRM, brands and looks or battery life.
