All those programs like boot randomizer and such add an extra line to the boot.ini and make it so u have to chose between one or the other. i hate having to chose. id rather it just do it. if i use one of those programs and let it add that extra line to make the new boot screen work. would the computer still boot up if i just delete the origonal boot line and just leave the new one?

it should work, but it's a lot safer to use this method:

go to my computer, right click choose "properties", select "advanced" tab and go to "startup and recovery setting" and select your default o/s (the one which has your custom boot screen) and LAST STEP, put 0s for "time to display o/s list"

so next time you wont see the o/s list...hope this help

In answer to the original question:

Yes. But back up your original boot.ini in case you...you know...

If you screw it up, windows should use the classic logon. Once your back on the desktop you can fix it or restore it if your a smart dude and you backed up your boot.ini as stated in the previous post.

Put a differently named ntoskrnl.exe in the same folder as the original and edit boot.ini to have it pointing to the new one.

For example:

QUOTE
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /KERNEL=lnrksotn.exe

KERNEL= should point to the alternate ntoskrnl.
