Neowin Forums > *nix Customization & Support > Linux Server/BSD/Unix

Awhile ago their was a thread and in it was the name of a client that can be used in MS Windows to act as a X-Server in Windows so I can run programs off of my remote Linux box. What was the name of that program? I've searched myself to death already wink.gif

Thanks!

You mean VNC with variants such as: TightVNC, Ultr@VNC, RealVNC, TridiaVNC, etc.?

It is remote desktop application. Most have server and veiwer apps for windows and linux so that you can control your linux box remotely from windows and vice versa.

At my school, we use X-Win32 to run a XServer on Windows. You have to buy a license for it though.

hmm..it isn't VNC, although I should probably just use that. I'm talking about x-forwarding (not remote desktoping), where a program is forwarded from one machine to another machine's x-server.

zeta: X-Win32? There was another program mentioned in an earlier thread (although I can't find it for the life of me). Something like DeadX or something similar. I'd like to avoid paying for something, but thanks for the option!

You can get xorg to build under cygwin also. From what I've heard the performance has surpassed that of the other commercial clients, like exceed.

putty supports x forwarding through ssh. ill try to find a tutorial for you, if i can remember, you mess with you xconfig file and change # of monitors to multiple, and network mode to passive, somerthing along those lines, i'll have to check though.
