Open the iPod software updater and run a restore..... all iPods come mac formatted and you must restore on a PC before using on a PC

^ He's talking about iPod mini, HP only makes the default ones tongue.gif

In my opinion here's what you should do:

1. Unstall iTunes
2. Reinstall using the CD given, when prompted to format and reset the iPod, do it.

Should be good to go smile.gif

so in order to have it work in both windows and mac os x-it needs to be formatted as fat32?

i got mini as well, having both windows and mac computers, i first went to mac to setup and update it, then uploaded some songs, then day later went to windows and iTuneshelper said to insert CD that came with iPod, so i did and it formatted whole thing to windows fat32... pinch.gif

I don't think you can use an iPod with a PC and a Mac.

P.S - Havn't you guys noticed the more than usual amount of iPod related topics due to the Xmas season. I always thought this was the wrong forum to post to. I was always told to post in the
'PDA, tablet and mobile devices' forum. rolleyes.gif

When I got my Ipod it also had to be 1st formatted to Win32 before I could start copying files across.

Also you might want to try http://www.ipodlounge.com for Ipod related info, great site pointed out to me when I 1st got mine

you mean formatted to fat32

fat32 = filesystem
win32 = API

I had that prob. all I had to do was reset the ipod (you don't loose ur songs) by holding down like the select button and the play/pause button. Trust me, it works!

If i was mentioning an hP ipod i would have said "HP iPod" to me when someone says iPod i will take it as a true apple iPod

How in the hell is resetting an iPod going to format it for windows? If you read the instructions, and the apple website it does say that before using an iPod on a windows machine, you must restore it using the iPod software updater, to format it from HFS to FAT32. a reset will not do this

No, my iPod was NOT mac formatted, unless when the installation 'cofigured' it, it reformatted it, which I doubt. I'm just giving the answer to what helped me when my ipod wasn't recegnized by windows one time.

YEs during the installation the iPod is configured! that is why it asks you to connect it

Ok, fine. But unless this guy never installed the software, which makes no sense not to, then why would this be a problem?

I don't think you can use an iPod with a PC and a Mac.
After i formatted it to fat32, transfered some music from PC, then plugged it into Mac and everything worked, the only thing that Apple forgot is fat32's iPod lost its icon...either get original icon from updater or download you want from inet...then after i changed icon, i also decided to change name of ipod, but even after that. i plugged it back into PC after playing with it on mac - everything works...

A PC formatted iPod will work on a mac and pc but not a mac formatted ipod...
