I'm looking for a free program which would allow me to send SMS messages from my computer.

Well, with a mac, you can just use address book (comes with OS X 10.3) and it sends it from your bluetooth phone, not sure about PC's, if that's what you're using.

There are certain programs on the pc but I cant remeber their name , you could use www.02.co.uk and www.fonetastic.co.uk (iirc) for their free txt service

Aol instant messenger can do it. On the newish ones, when u go to add buddies, you can add a cell phone. Any message u send to it, is sent as an SMS.

yea u can do that, but if their phone doesnt have aim support, they will see the message, but they wont be able to respond to it. if you just wanna send text messages and dont expect a reply, u can go to the carrier's website and they usually allow u to send text messages to other peoples phones.

MSN Messenger has a similar feature too. However the person I want to send a sms to, didn't add cell phone number in the profile.

Check their service provider's site. Most of them do have a page for sending text messages to their customers.
