I am trying to recover some data off of a FAT32 hard drive and move to an NTFS formatted drive. I am using Knoppix on CD with the 2.4 kernel. The problem I am havinn is that when I try to create a new folder on the NTFS drive, it says Folder Cannot Be Created. Then when I try to move some files, it says <FILENAME> Cannot Be Created. The drive had a Read Only check beside it, so I unchecked that. Then I noticed something called Captive NTFS (or something like that) and ran it. It found some NTFS drivers and said everything was fine. I still cannot create folders or files on the NTFS drive. I will admit, I have never used and Linux distro before so I am flying blind here. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

in knoppix ntfs writing is off by default- even if u enable it.
you would have to do a custom build to allow for ntfs writing- (which would b unreliable)
u could put a fat partition on the ntfs drive- then draw the data from withing windows from the fat to the ntfs partition and return the fat patition to ntfs if u wish.
(xp n' 2k only allow creation of 32gb fat partitions, so if that's a problem u can get a tool- like partition magic)

writing to NTFS filesystems is still shaky from within linux, i would recommend creating a small fat partiton on the other disk, and copying it to there.

Well, its a moot point now. The drive I'm trying to rescue has officially died. Just sits there and clicks and won't be recognized by the BIOS. Thanks for the tips in case this happens in the future. I will have an extra FAT32 drive laying around.

Did you try the hard drive freezer trick?

Yep, left it in there for 45 minutes. It was real cold. Still nothing but crappy clicks. It also gets real hot real fast. Sounds like the spindle is binding up and can't spin up to its proper speed. Oh well, not my drive and I did my best. smile.gif
