I am thinking of getting a iBook through the UK apple store. What I am not sure of is if it comes with the Video Adapter needed for external displays. Can anyone clarify this for me?
kitchenutensils
im guessing not ... can anyone clarify?
jeff_pony
That what im thinking, but I want to know before I buy the adapter. Also is the Brenthaven Fusion 12 Messenger Case worth the price? I'm just going on a Mac spending bender here biggrin.gif

It does come with a mini DVI to VGA adapter for free, all the other adapters must be bought separately (for instance the mini DVI to S-Video/Composite is NOT included)
jeff_pony
Okay thats great. All I will need to connect to for now is VGA

One more Q. I have selected 512 MB of ram, will this be 1 stick allowing for an upgrade. Or two 256 sticks?

iBooks have 256MB soldered onboard, and have a single SODIMM slot, so yours will come with the slot filled. (unless Apple has changed them recently).

No, its a mini-VGA. The ibook does not have DVI-Capability smile.gif

Oh, and your wrong aswell.
The 256mb that ibooks come with is made from 128mb soldered onboard, and a 128mb card

That would make sense when compared to the ram limits. Slightly annoying though due to the cost of a single stick of 1 gig memory. If you have two slots you can get to a gigs worth of memory more cheaply. Plus at £70 for an extra 256MB of ram are apple taking people for a ride?

EDIT: What I am doing now is leaving the memory as standard. Using that money to have a bigger hard disk and then buying 512 MB of ram from crucial at £83.

BTW the new iBooks have 256 on board.

iBooks come with 256MB RAM and 1 SODIMM spot... that's why 1GB more is so expensive. For extra ram, you shld get from crucial, you save alot.

ibooks come with 256mb built in and 1 free slot that can take up to 1 gig max.

I stand corrected, but you are wrong about the ram thing iBooks now come with 256MB ram soldered on the motherboard instead of the 128MB they used to have about 2 revisions back. tongue.gif

in the last speed boost they changed it to 256 onboard i believe

1 GB SODIMM sticks aren't really that expensive... it's just a common misconception among Mac laptop users that Apple overcharges for RAM and that you should get Crucial instead. In reality, they both overcharge.

Hey, at least that's better than mine, it only has 64MB soldered onboard and one slot sad.gif I'm thinking of picking up a logic board from a later model 600Mhz or 700Mhz iBook to replace the board in mine. That would give me more onboard RAM and a Radeon video card. I've seen them on eBay for less than $200. Then I could sell my logic board to recoup some of the money. I'd probably add a larger hard drive and a combo drive while I had it apart. As it is, I'm thinking of doing the bus speed hack on this one sometime soon (when I have the time).

i got a gig of ram for my iBook back in august, and it was 249 from other world computing (macsales.com) and i just checked... same price with lifetime warranty

iBook G4s use PC2100, not PC2700. Would PC2700 with 333 MHz speed or any speed work fine with an iBook even if the "onboard RAM" is PC2100 with 233 MHz speed or something like that? tongue.gif Thanks.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-145-482&depa=0 - would that work in the current iBook G4s?
StevoFC
yes pc2700 will work fine, and in many cases is cheaper than pc2100 right now. the pc2700 will just clock itself down.

and yes the corsair will work fine in it. that's the exact one i have in mine.
