Hiya everyone, I have been waiting for the day for this section to be put in, yay! smile.gif

Right, what I need help with. I am hopefully going to buy a Peugeot 106 2002 Independence for myself, and maybe do some modifications to it, alloys maybe some new brake lights etc. But I need some Car insurance obviously, I am male and 17 and in the UK, that *apparently* means trouble. I had got a quote from a random company I found in the Phone book and they quoted me £1350 for a 1.1 Peugeot, as quoted above. Rediculous, I was wondering if anyone has any good advice on Car Insurance sellers, cheap ones with good service and reliability? I need Fully Comprehensive and 3rd Party is just not good enough. Also, I have checked out Tesco Car insurance and I don't want to go with them because if you crash into another Tesco car insurance user you aren't covered, thats why it's so cheap. Check their Terms and Conditions for information on it. wink.gif Also, just for reference I have added a picture of the same model car I am getting.
Thanks everyone,
JMann

Well, I just got a Vauxhall Tigra 1.4, that came in at ~£1400 Fully comp with Nationwide. The difference may be that I am 22, but I have only had my license for a year. Actually I thought £1400 was ok as some of the others were quoting £2300 noexpression.gif
JMann
Definately, thanks Ultima. I will check them out and get a Quote from them. More please. wink.gif
twiglet
you are going to have a hard time beating that quote, especially fully comp.
see if they can bump your excess up a bit, that should reduce the premium a little. but honestly, you'll have a hard time beating that.
www.confused.com will search through a load of insurance providers for you, give it a shot.
lunamonkey
My first insurance in my car when I was 20 was £1600, in the same car with 3 years no claims, and I'm 24 now it's only £450 a year.

I'm with Nationwide, and I drive a Saxo 1.6 VTR.

"More than" were cheaper (quoted in 2004) than Nationwide, but I work for Nationwide, so it's just easier.
Kerm
That sounds like a brilliant quote mate, if your not prepared to pay that then i doubt you'll be able to get insured with anyone.
Im 18 and to get me insured as a second driver on my mums is going on £2000, as a SECOND driver.
I wish i could get £1400.
whoreman
do pass plus and give the quote me happy people a phone - 48% off!
Sleeper
Looks like your in the same boat that as all other 17yr old lads in the UK, that quote is quite reasonable for the car. Im 21 now and only just seeing my insurance start to fall.

The best way to start is to get someone else who has been driving awhile and is older, and take the policy out in there name, and have you on the policy as a named driver.

Give http://www.cis.co.uk a go, they were great for the first year I was driving, the reason your being qouted that much is becasuse of your age, age of the car and the value of the car, insurance companys recommend for your first car you have something that is cheap, like a 10yr old fiesta or something! (Yeah i laughed at this as well)

Start off your driving on someone elses policy, only problem is you dont build up your own no claims discount, so only do this for the first couple of years to get you started.

Im now driving a Y Reg 1.6 Zetec Focus, and the insurance is only £45 a month.

Hope this information helps.

If only they had that offer 3 years ago. Would have saved a lot of money. lol.

Lose the alloys and the mods, unless you want to take the illegal route.

My friend has a Renault Clio 1.4 16v 2001, and he pays just over £800 for his insurance.
Another guy has a Rover Metro 1.1 'J' reg (ha) and he pays about £900.

I got quoted for my Dad's Merc A-Class 1.4 'W' reg as a second driver, and its only an extra £250.

You are being ripped.

I pay $3200 a year.

21 yr. old male, perfect driving record, perfect credit, high grades in school, non-smoker.
Car is a 2000 Silver Neon 4 door.

Yeah, sometimes having a penis sucks hmm.gif

Whoa, thanks for all your reply's. I am looking in depth into all your suggestions. Its just annoying all 17 to 20 year olds are so untrusted. no.gif

Well, it's the previous 17-20 year old drivers that have ruined it for us. Blame your elders everyone! haha.

Yeah, it sucks until you meet a girl...but then you still have to pay the insurance and now you have to keep the lady happy too, which in turn costs you more money indirectly pinch.gif Ain't life a bitch wink.gif

Ok, I just tried CIS, Sleeper's suggestion, I go to get a quote, here: http://www.cis.co.uk/servlet/Satellite?cid...dardCIS&c=Page#

And when I click Get A quote now it comes up with a popup saying loading please wait then it disappears then nothing happens?? Any ideas? ohmy.gif

I pay $1700 for full coverage on a 1999 Mustang GT Convertible. Which i am the original owner of. They say your insurance goes down a lot when you hit 27, BS! I'm 28 and the insurance has only gone down $300 over the last 5 years! I ordered a new '05 GT and shudder to think what i am going to pay now with 300HP and 320 Torque. Hopefully those new side impact airbags will put it down a little.
....
You should expect to pay that much no matter what kind of vehicle you own, or where you decide to get it from, based on your age. Sorry.

$2300.00 a year for liability on my 1972 Chevelle.

Best just to drive a totally unmodified banger until you hit about 22-23 - and get some no claims bonus points under your belt.

I'm currently insured on my reasonably well modified Corrado G60 - various stuff including koni suspension, alloys, a bit of engine tweakage (power increase of 50BHP) exhaust, stereo, etc etc.. last year (at 23 with 3 years no claims) I was paying £1,400 fully comp - this year that has dropped by a significant amount - same policy is now being offered to me at £770 - now 24 with 4 years no claims.

I've spent a long time paying through the damn nose with expensive cars to get where I am now. I can only reccomend sticking with a cheap reliable unmodified motor as I don't know if it was worth it to be quite honest.

I'm 18 and I have a 2005 Ford Focus -- my yearly insurance cost is $3250, which is about $270.00 a month.

try CIS again. my parents are with them and we like them alot. you can even get someone who works for the company come out and talk with you. well in my area you can because the insureance sales men lives up the road. hardly get that now do you?

my mum insures my car for me. it in her name, it's fully comp any driver. but got me(age 16) and my dad (6 points) as named drivers.
i drive a smart car which is like group 1-2 and its only £600,
now if i wanted to just insure it in my name it would be like well over the £1500 mark because i'm 16, even thou i'm reged as disabled and even tryed royal sun allience who insure disabled drivers quoted over 2k

also try Liverpool Victoria. Norwich union. you just have to spend some time looking thru the yello pages and you local pages (such as bt or thompson local)
normaly when my bro, dad or me need insureance my mum does it because she finds all the good companys and has tons of time on her hands.

also keep trying with other companies other so many weeks. because it's about risk and how many people they insure. it's very compleaxed

I used to do that with all my clients.

Yep...if you are under your parent's policy, you will save money.

Yeah, but insurance companies don't change rates weekly....it's more of a bi-annual....possibly even yearly. Just to change rates, takes the insurance companies many months to do.

im 18 years old. i had a clio (52 plate) insurance was £1400, it WAS a 1.2 16v, no mods cos i hate them. Then i crashed her into a field. This was with my mum as the main driver and me as a SECOND driver. I could of got insured by my self but it was £3000!

So i bought myself a new clio, same model just got some extras, air con etc, now, i just renewed my insurance policy, its £700 with the same details as above. in my own name its still £2200.

If your parents will let you its best to get it in your parents name, BUT only if there the primary driver. (its not correct to just put it in there name to save money)

EDIT:!!! The above policys are with tescos (there very good), but i got some quotes with Norwich union and there even better! for the same price as the clio 1.2 16v i can get insured on a Audi A3 1.8turbo. There like 6-8 insurance groups higher, but its £3000 in my own name for the audi.

Currently I am paying £740 to insure my 2001 VW Golf GT TDI PD130. I'm 23 with 3 years no claims living in near a city centre and parking on the street. This is through Privilege Insurance, not too bad I think.

The previous insurer I used was Churchill and they were well cheap (around £400) on my two smaller cars when I had them - 97' VW Polo and a '93 Rover Metro. As with one of the other suggestions on this thread I would recommend you do a Pass Plus - it’s probably worth over £150-200 saving on your insurance if you do it and it only should cost £80 to do it.

pass plus (by law) has to be 6 FULL lessons, most lessons are around £20 a lesson so i mare that to be £120. And you will only really benifit from it for the first 2 years, but its still worth it. i wish i had done it, but theres nothing worse that passing your test then having to sit with an instructor for another 6 hours!

I managed to get it 'as a whole course' for £80 when I did mine back in 2001. Shop around as the instuctor I passed my test with was going to charge around £120 ... as long as you show to your driving instructor that you have learn't the main areas of the course (night driving & motorway driving) you should be fine.

Try Norwich Union and esure, both should be quite competitive. Also try and do pass plus, that helps a lot.

I remember when I was 17 (23 now) had a BMW 316i as a first car and insurance was just crazy, had to get insured on my moms as a named driver and even then it was £1000.

Thankfully since then it has gone down, hopefully by age 25 it should really drop.

Good luck with the search

give CIS a phone call, they're excellent. my little brother has his 51 reg 1.2 punto insured for £800 fully comp

You could go as second driver on one of your parents insurance, this is cheaper, but as someone mentioned before you dont build up any history of your own. Might be a good idea til you are earning more or something?

Another idea is to invest in a "Thatcham" approved security wheel device such as the DiskLok. A lot of insurance companies will often give insurance discounts between 10 - 15% for having one of these on your car. Locks like the disklok are expensive, but would be worth your while in the long run.
JMann
OK, thanks. I seem to keep hearing CIS so I am going to ring them fairly soon to get some advice and a quote for a car. I tried Norwich Union, but they would not insure me because I was under 21. They dont ensure people under 21.

Yeah thats the way it goes, Ive been doing that and my fiesta insurance has dropped from £1200 to £750 with direct line. Thats on a Vreg fiesta 1.25 LX .
Anyway it gives you plenty of time to save some cash and spend it on something worthwile to mod and mods !

1.4 16v Clio Alize, on my Mum's insurance, £350 fully comp.

Trust me, get yer parents to put it on their insurance and you as a named driver.

OH, and don't mod it, not only will it look like a piece of crap and you'll get laughed at, but your insurance will go up, really bad.
Shibby
best stick to your parents insureance for a year or two. then it be more afforable to insure the car.
i hate insureance, people can pay like over a grand for insureance when older people could get it for £150-300

my smart car is like group 1-2 insureance and it only costed my mum something like £150 to insure with smart them selves yet if i want to insure it it be over a grand.

You lie smile.gif

I am 18 and with Norwich Union Direct covering me on my Pug 106, and they quoted me happy back when I was 17. I did pass plus for £100, got my 48% off, saving me £900. Good deal biggrin.gif I decided to bite the bullet and get my own policy to try and get some NCD under my belt, my next door neighbour has a 106 GTi running about 35-40 bhp over standard and i'm planning on buying it in 2 years biggrin.gif

Norwich Union Direct, and a few other places, do 10 months cover, but give you one full years NCD, therefore speeding up the process, maybe you could look into that
LiGhTfast
20 and payin £1300 on my 1.4 16v Corsa SRi with my mum on as second driver and 1 claim, not good but not bad imho
Juski814
i didn't get my license until i was 19, even with a crappy car my insurance was $1200 per 6-month period from progressive... now that i am 21 over the last few renewals my price has dropped down to $400 per 6-month period... it just takes time to built up "credit" with the company before they start cutting you breaks...
Sleeper
seriously try CIS again, but this time try it with your parents as the policy holder and you as a named driver (providing your mam and dad don't mind this)

Alot of insurance companys frown on this but it was suggested to me via the CIS sales rep when he came to my house to quote me. It was about £3000 for my own policy, but out £800 under my dads name.

Note: You mam/dad's existing no claims discount won't count, as that is already inuse on there other policy.
JMann
gdub2611, whoa. That is weird. I am not lying at all, I am going to try ringing them tommorow when they are open and discuss this with them, that is weird. Thanks. Ok, Sleeper I am going to try and get another Quote from them now with these modifications ok. I will tell you all how I get on.
Thanks again,
JMann

Edit: Just spoken with my Parents, and neither of them say try it, because they cannot change insurance companies, due to there NCB, which they already have and they would lose that if we switched to CIS.
red.
i used churchill which were cheaper than all of the other companies i tried for my fiesta.

I am currently using "More Than". Not only do I find them cheap, but when I have had a claim, they settle VERY quickly.

Heh, sorry for sounding so blunt JMann. smile.gif Just had a word with a few friends, and another friend has had a policy with them since he just passed his test at the age of 17, although he was almost 18, but another friend got insured on his 1.4 Pug 205 not but a month ago, aged 17 at the time, although also nearly 18. It is very weird that they won't even quote you. The car doesn't have a 2.0 under the bonnet or anything does it? tongue.gif

Sorry mate, but that is utter rubbish, tesco cannot refuse to cover your policy if you have an accident and the other party happens to be a tesco customer. I have read the tesco policy documents and it does not state anywhere that if the other party is a tesco user you will be un-insured. You have a minimum requirment by law of third party insurance, if you have a prang that is your fault and the person you run into is insured by tesco, they cannot refuse to honor the claim of the other person, just because you both have the same insurer.

Im currently on my dad's insurance - full no claims (8 years it maxes out at) - and without me on the insurance the yearly cost is £245 and with me on it as a second driver it bumps up to just over £1,800 jsut cause I'm 18.

Thats with elephant.co.uk on a '98 Mondeo 1.8 Zetec with alloys wheel added onto the policy cover.

I'd suggest waiting till your 18 and buying a new Citreon C2 with a year free insurance - it'll be expensive for the car but thats single years no claim will drop the cost of the 2nd considerably if you stick with the same insurance company. My mate did it on the Saxo and he spent I think £6k on the car new and after his first year his insurance went down to £750 (aged 19 at the time) working it out he has saved about 15% buying a new car with a years free insurance than he would've done buying a banger and spending a ton on insurance.

Have you passed your test yet? If your trying to get insurance on a modified car (even alloys) with a provisional your premium will be through the roof, I'd suggest saving the money doing pass plus and trying again when your 18.
Brandon
When i get my own car (im 15, so if i got it at 17) state farm insurence quoted my dad about $70 a month for liability on a car that was older then 5 years, and worth less then 7,000
