I'm extremely bored today. I was just sitting around and I thought, I have an old strobe light in my closet that has different color inserts. and that gave me an idea.

so yeah, I took my iBook apart...and took pics of course. I figured I would post this here because people seem to ask about it sometimes.

added a little more aqua to it.... laugh.gif

as you can see the top comes right off completely. just 4 hex screws and that's it

Good job man! Looks nice!
mikedc1760
You put that blue sheet on just like that? So you take out that white piece of paper and just put the other in? WOW, great job.
XiXora

i didn't post it because i thought it was impressive or hard to do. a lot of people have said things about it so i just wanted to show it was extremely easy.

and no i didn't take out the white sheet. it is glued down under the foam so i left it there.
karl.tacheron
Cool Mod. How about making a classic apple logo with your own printout?
Trunten
ohmy.gif Thank you, my friend! wink.gif It looks a lot better like that! yes.gif If I ever get one, I will try that. smile.gif I also have an old strobe light and its inserts. tongue.gif It's so quick and easy, but yet it's worth it! happy.gif

yeah that would be cool. you could make just about anything really. get a transparency sheet for an overhead projector and print something cool so the light still shines through.
karl.tacheron
You're right, a transparency would look great. I wouldn't use paper, though, since it wouldn't look very consistent with light shining through.
QuarterSwede
Wow, that was insanely easy. Nice job StevoFC. I likey! Now, can I afford an iBook and is the speed decent? hmmmm ...

yeah it works great. mine is 1.33ghz. when i got it i was actually surprised how great it ran, even before i upped the ram to 768mb.
.....
That's a great looking mod! If I get an iBook I'll definitely be doing the same to mine.
Gary_Player
Thats pretty sweet...I wonder if its that easy on a powerbook

LMAO, I am so sorry. I didn't mean too say that sarcastically. I was serious. I was just trying ask if it was really that simple to do.I am going to try this tomorrow. LOL sorry for the misunderstanding. Heh, come to think of it I dod sound like a smart @ss in that post. Sorry.
StevoFC
it is really simple. the hardest part is getting the outer case off once you have the screws out. it has little tiny clips that just kind of hold it in place and you don't want to push on the screen or bend it while you do it.
Detroit
Very nice mod smile.gif

Ah, so you got it at 256mb before? What amount of performance leap did you see after 768?
Jonny Wake
That looks very nice. It work look great with a black case.

yeah it came with 256 built in and i added a 512. it's hard to explain the performance difference. i guess it's more responsive. and many more programs can be open at once with little to no lag. but it actually runs pretty well with just the 256 in it.
mikedc1760
I think I'm going to try it with a black paper or whatever those things are called.
Senseotech
They're called gels, and are used in Studio/stage lights as well. They come in hundreds of different colors; I got a sheet of Crimson Red to do some mods on my PC's lights awhile ago. I'd use the left overs to do this, if I wasn't so jittery about opening my iBook hmm.gif
StevoFC
honestly it's not hard at all. just be careful and don't put too much pressure on the screen.

i was thinking about using red also, but i thought it may look too pink since i left the white piece in.
rajputwarrior
that's why i got now is the 256, huge performance boost with 512! and yeah what kind of paper is that becuase i really want to do that but with red paper
auero
Didn't that just void your warrenty?
StevoFC

yeah but if i ever need it fixed i'll just take it out first. that's why i didn't rip out the other stuff in there already.
bigbluemnm
im thinkin of doin this on my g3 ibook. cant u just use tissue paper?
StevoFC
yeah tissue paper will work. might not look as good as other things though.
Rudy
i would try it with green transparent paper.....that would look great
bigbluemnm
i really want to do it orange.....where can u get the "stuff" to make it look good, gels or w/e they are called
dougal.s
Good one StevoFC! Was considering doing this, but was hesitating as to how simple it actually was!!

Cheers.

Dougal.
roadwarrior
Darn, looks just like mine now. I used a piece of plastic from a notebook though. I guess I will change my color soon. sad.gif

Really, I doubt it... a white sheet can't exactly "tint" the red is at the top, right?
Correct me if I'm wrong, I always thought that having it like that wouldn't do anything.
SerialStorm
Looks great, I wonder if it is that easy to do to a powerboook...

yeah it would probably work fine. i may try it one day, who knows. i'd prefer the blue though probably anyways.
NetRyder
Looks nice, StevoFC smile.gif
tariq
this is the coolest one i've seen so far...
RightWing
Dude that is simple and sweet..... why can't more girls come like that? lol
cswadner
cool stuff! seems easy enough.... will have to try that when i get an iBook sometime

yeah that is pretty sweet. i need to find something here to do that with. if i do i may make the old apple logo.
Xer34
What I did to mine is remove that white sheet underneath. Makes the Apple logo MUCH brighter instead of diffusing it which is what that does. I thought about doing the vintage logo, but Im far too lazy for that at the moment. Looks good though Stevo, I thought you slapped a Fruit Roll Up on there for a minute though laugh.gif

The vintage logo is done with one of the old stickers that used to come with Macs before they switched to the monochrome logo.
Zenith
looks great! i wasnt sure how a blue light would look, but it actually really works well with the Aqua theme in Mac OS X.

A few other readers were commenting on haveing different coloured lights in their *books. i know a site ( here ) which has pictures of many different Mac customisations. a pretty nice site tongue.gif

nexionly
how would I do this with my powerbook? I wanna make it green...
karl.tacheron
It's exactly the same way as StevoFC did it, nexionly.
Xab
So how easy is this to do to a Powerbook? I just got my new 15" and would like to make the backlight hunter green, or at least remove that white sheet and make it brighter.
ahfunaki
I'm sure its the same for the powerbooks...
rajputwarrior
well i did it to my ibook smile.gif

thanx Stevo for the inspiration!

rajputwarrior
what does that have to do with this thread?
ahfunaki
how did you guys get the screws at the bottom of the screen?

I cant get my alan wrench to fit down there at all...

I'm assuming maybe the powerbooks are different than the ibooks now...
rajputwarrior
the ibook is pretty easy, the powerbooks i am not to sure about, i am sure the write allen wrench will do it
