My dad has the 700m, and it's a sweet machine, but he was looking primarily for portability.
I'd recommend going for the 6000. 6.6 lbs is not too bad to carry around campus, but you'll definitely appreciate the larger, higher resolution screen while coding (or doing anything else for that matter).
If you were to buy from dell, which I wouldn't recommend, go for the Inspiron XPS or the 700m. The Inspiron is a very large laptop with lots of power, and the 700m is a smaller laptop based on mobility. Both are very good, but I remember someone saying that Dell used 4200rpm HDDs in their laptops which is a big turnoff.
I would rather go for something made by HP. HP's 17" laptops look really great. Sony's, although more expensive are really nice too. If your application allows you, the 15" powerbook is a great candidate.
Remember that you should spend a little more money now, than spend lots afterwards.
Geta 4 year warranty, and make sure the laptop's processor and screen are good.

I have an Inspiron 6000, I requested the Hitachi 8MB Cache 7200RPM 60GB Drive. It's availble with the 6000 and other Dell Laptops, you just have to request it.
^^thanks for the heads up.
