Full Version: what is the best firewall
I'm Looking For A Great Firewall I'm Using symantec corp firewall and vpn 7 and I Whant To Know What firewalls are better but easy on the system

ZoneAlarm is definitely not the best firewall... heh far from it. However, most people are far too biased to give you an appropriate answer -most people will have only tried 1-3 firewalls.
I've only tried out Kerio 2.15, Kerio 4, Output, and the Windows Firewall in Windows. And from all of those, I found Kerio 2.15 to be the best, as it probably has the smallest memory footprint out of all the firewalls out there, and I've never run into a problem...it also has passed all security tests at pcflank.com, blackcode, auditmypc, and grc.
Try and stay away from firewalls that offer ad-blockers, cookie checkers, etc. if you don't need them.

ı am using agnitum outpost, it is really good...
go for PC CILIN 2005 from trend Micro, is all in one, the best security u can find right now, they always update their antivirus software, everyday, and also I hear that trend Micro is the best security company for PC
I use Sygate Personal Firewall, works great, and havn't had any problems...

I also like sygate although it doesn't have the smallest memory footprint.
I've use ZA, both Kerios, Norton, Mcaffee, I think Outpost, and it seems like one other.
I like the features and interfase of sygate the best. I had problems with Mcaffee not disabling when I told it to. Norton was sluggish and sloppy feeling. If I remember, both Kerios were just annoying for me.

the best firewal is a hardware firewall.
but what i reccomend is you download software ones and then take the ShieldsUp test.

I too use Zone Alarm Pro versin 4.5 and ive never had a problem with it. . however, what are the new editions like? The newer versions? Arent they more protective? Or should i just stick with 4.5?

Sygate Personal Firewall, been using it since the first instances of the msblast 
Zone Alarm is the best that I have tried. I have not tried an abundance of them though. Just Aone Alarm, Symantec, McAfee, and the Windows Firewall.

I vote for sygate also....but rules and opening ports take a bit of learning curve
Outpost for me. Good interface though not free.
most of those firewalls are for not verry good they are more for the average user I'm a Network Admin

Well that is pretty much what you get for a personal firewall. I'd like to know if there are any better at the enterprise level.

I think you mean it blocks incoming and not outgoing....
None of these firewalls are perfect, they are just software designed for personal use. You can't expect the same protection you would get from a $6,000 Sonicwall

Tiny Personal Firewall, from www.tinysoftware.com is the best I've used so far. I think they're the same people that make Kerio. I tried Kerio, and Tiny Personal Firewall is better. More control.

For home use, neither corp or enterprise fw will do. They would probably be quite complicated. But if you insist then go with corp.

if you don't need a control over which application can access the Internet use Windows XP Service pack 2 Firewall

I use the home/ office version of Astaro Security Linux. Astaro.com
You said software firewall so everyone though you meant client side.
Basicly any of the linux based firewall distros will do for a great cheap setup.
With Astaro you have SNORT, SQUID (caching) and of course its a router. You can also do VPN endpoints or PPtP.
It uses NAT and also has packet filters.
Mine was free because they were offering free home use up to 10 hosts.
Other ones are ipCop, Smoothwall, Clarkconnect, MonoWall.
People often say hardware/ software firewall. As far as I know the "hardware" means its a seperate device on your network with specifically designed software for firewall functions.
Is that what you are wanting?
Reading yoru first post again you are looking for a software firewall on the client side. As far as I know the ones people are listing is pretty much it. Most large compnaies don't have anything more sophisticated internally. I think recently they are moving more and more to managing per host but most places are likely to just use SP2.

I'm now thinking about a hardware firewall then a corp or enterprise firewall but depending on price i might stick with symantec corp firewall 7 with vpn

Even though Mcafee is the only firewall that has detected my home network, go figure, I want to kill it every time I see the boot screen now. For some reason their security products won't play together and tell me to "buy firewall/antivirus now!" even though I'm running both. Anyway, hardware or depending on if you're a "tinkerer" or a "set and forget", like me (that's why I'm not changing from Mcafee), Kerio or Symantec.

Lots of free *nix firewalls would fall into the "enterprise" category. I've tried iptables (linux), ipfw (FreeBSD) and pf (FreeBSD and OpenBSD). I like pf best. However be warned that the learning curve can be very steep.
