That taskbar looked like someone vomited over it. Linux will never make it to grade 1 interms of GUI.

I need a windows PC for music making applications - Linux is getting more and more music software being developed but it's nowhere near being able to compete with windows stuff. Saying that I installed DeMudi to see what it was like, and were it not for the fact my (decent, ASIO) soundcard didn't have ALSA support I'd probably be using it now. I just bought an old school iMac so I could chuck Ubuntu on it, and very nice it is too, although I get the impression many Mac fans might not be too happy with me.

its transparent, i have a black wallpaper. hte screenshot was 1280x1024, maybe you didnt zoom in and hte fonts looked all ****** up?

there is nothing about htat taskbar that is any different htan the windows one, other than the transparency. if you dont like the style of the task buttons, you can change them. ussually id make those transparent as well, but this was a fresh install and i didnt have that installed yet. that applet also popups up a preview of the window when you put hte mouse over the task. as far as im concerned, linux is years ahead of windows in terms of GUI. after using longhorn for a while and then switching to linux, i realized where a lot of the ideas for longhorn explorer came from, such as icon zooming. except in linux it actually works now with scalable vectors, instead of enlargning a 32px bmp like longhorn does(for now anyway...).

Someone did, it was me the second I saw it I am just kidding but by default KDE IMHO is far from pleasing to the eye. To be fair it does offer many tweaks to make it look better. There’s even a theme included called Redmond....

I myself still prefer the MsRoyale theme on Windows.

g-n-t I have a quick question. Why don't the letters on the titlebars line up right? Look at the KIconEdit title bar for a good example.

Nah I tried it i think it is interesting however i am too used to windows and i would not like to have linux on my primary rig however it could be good on a secondary rig as it is fun and interesting to use

yep been running dual with linux for about 3 years, I use Fedora 3 about 66% of the time.

Once it supports all the games I play, i might take a stab at it!

using cedega, you can run pretty much all the games you play on windows in linux. for low end cards, it works fine.

I played with SUSE Linux 9.2 for a little while. I liked it, but had some hardware issues that never got resolved. Went on the net to various Linux forums and asked here, but never really got any help, so I gave up. Always ended up with half @ssed responses that left me with more questions than answers.

there is a royale theme for linux. its part of the akdc thing.

i have no clue why those buttons looked like that. it never does that ussually, i just noticed it. maybe they were shifting when i took the screenie?

i tried again and opened a lot of apps and made the task area smaller, i didnt have any problems.

Hardware issues and gaming are the two issues holding me back at this point.

Video game support from most of the major publishers would probably cause linux desktop use to skyrocket. I know I'd switched in a heartbeat.

I actually went out and bought Suse 8.2 when it was new. Used it for awhile, but I made the mistake of not reading up on it some before hand. Uninstalled and went back to XP Pro. I still have it laying aroung and have since downloaded Suse 9.2,Lindows and Knoppix. I keep telling myself to try it, but those command lines and mounting things throw me for a loop!!

Already did and will never turn back......................

I'll never have to worry about any of the "Windows" issues again (viruses, defragging, activation schemes, paying through the nose, outlandish EULAs, etc...). The efforts of learning Linux is well worth the efforts.

I wouldn't switch to Linux, I'd rather run Windows and Linux on the same computer (or maybe even different computers)

Linux is actually pretty cool, I never have the patience to figure stuff out though, maybe over the summer
