I already started this poll in the linux section, I should have put it here.

Why did you answer the way you did?

Seriously, to the hundreds of people that look at the post, is it that hard to vote? On the other poll, 1,014 people looked at it, only 61 votes. It's not that hard!
Lasker
I did not want to switch to Linux because is a inmature and incompatible OS, lacks of games, lack of most drivers for hardware, I will switch to Linux when they have the compatibility and mature like Microsoft and Apple
binkgle
what about adding a "yes, planning to do so" option as well? cause that's where i am, and will be installing probably ubuntu when i get a free moment.
Rix
Like i said before, better hardware support. I no this isn't down to linux itself but If it was more popular i suppose hardware makers would make drivers for it smile.gif
Rob2687
Yeah...better hardware support and if it didnt take 10 years to install things

I agree with that. For me it almost feels like something I can tinker around with on one of my older computers, not an OS that I could use on my primary machine. I don't think that Linux has found it's niche yet. OSX is beautiful and works great with media applications. WinXP has all the software, gaming and driver support. Linux is very customizable, but only if you actually know what you're doing. I just think that a few of the companies need to get together and make one distro that solves some of the problems that keep the average Win user away.

Maybe a mod could do that. Or I'd say just catogorize yourself in the "I'm already a linux user" group.

Once you know what your doing, installs usually take much less time on linux. At first it took me forever to install crap, but after learning more about it, I installed Photoshop CS un under 2 minutes, Maya 6.0 in probably 2-3. Windows speed is a joke compared to linux.

Well, my computer dual boots with WinXP and Ubuntu, and I don't think I'll switch 100% to Ubuntu anytime soon.

I'm just so used to Windows, and I'll just stick with my familiar OS.

But I still think Ubuntu is good enough to be many people's primary OS.
Farstrider
I have a Fedora Box running sip server and asterisk. My main PC is a Windows XP SP2 Box. And no, will not go over yet!
Tempus
Like I said in the other thread. I will use Linix when I can continue to make as much money as I do developing Microsoft .NET Desktop and ASP.NET solutions. Right now there is no real way to be a .NET developer and use Linux (and don't even suggest wine or mono, they just aren't nearly robust enough).
Savagearth
I use Linux base distro about 95% of the time, I only keep windows for playing some game when I want too. If better video card support can come to Linux and I'm more talking about ATI here, I'll be Linux only in a sec. I can say that I'm as comfortable under Linux then I'm under Windows by now, but I'm still in the learning curve and always will be if I want to keep up with the technologies.

In the last 2 years they have made a progress (Linux) that I never see in any other OS that I've use so far and I have to say, I've been a college teacher in network administrator and I was certified MCT (to be able to teaches along with A+, MCSE and CNA) teaching most of the time Microsoft product, and no I'm not a Linux fan boy nor a Windows or Mac one, I'll use what I think it's better for me at the present time and so far I'm better please under Linux.

Funny... I've actualy looking to install Mandrake and Knoppix biggrin.gif

Just came on to get some documentation... and found this poll - LOL

I don't think so because i really love panther

Definitely not, windows is the best thumbs_up.gif
kaffra
nope ill never switch completely, work related and also for games. but i do have a linux of the month installed just to check whats new and learn it.
Echilon
I did, twice, but both times I switched back to XP because linux plays windows games badly, and it's too much trouble to set up. If you could play windows games more easily, then I'd switch.
markjensen
Already a Linux user. Setup of Linux is more work, but the rewards pay off!

I'm a linux user. As I said in the other (now defunct) thread, I use Xandros Linux 3.0.1 OCE on this machine, with XP still around just for playing games.

Never, its such a goddamn hassle getting your hardware set-up. No decent gaming, the only reason I might use it would be for a home server.

Immature? Then why do millions of websites run on Linux webservers?
Immature? Then why do so many people have a hardware firewall with Linux (or BSD)?

Wait a minute... You say it lacks games. So why (in your next line) do you say Apple is better, when many games are not available for Mac OS X either?

Linux lacks most drivers? Oh, but so does Windows! It's the manufacturers who should provide drivers for hardware!
They don't provide drivers for Linux, yet Linux works on lots of hardware. Why? Because driver support is included in the kernel!

Installing things is very easy in Linux.
You open your graphical package manager (yes, graphical... you don't need the terminal in most distributions), type the name of the program, and click 'install'.
The program is installed, together with the dependencies.

I have to agree to that. It's too bad, but running games can (sometimes) be a bit of a pain sad.gif

Doesn't it annoy any of you that 50% of your pc's resources are aimed at your virus scanner, popup blockers, adware scanners and all that jazz? Its nice knowing that all my resources are dedicated to the performance of the OS.

I think I smell an exaggeration... whistle.gif

Plus popups are a browser target, not an OS target. wink.gif

No I would never go to linux or Mac. I will always stick with Windows! laugh.gif

True, but spyware does for the most part, bring on more popups, and open up security holes in windows.

no period, it doesnt count. laugh.gif

just by reading hte posts on this thread, i can tell that a lot of people are really misinformed about linux.

some people think that linux has no GUI and that you do everything from the commandline laugh.gif
David087
would never use linux unless it beats microsoft
calidude
Right now no, due to the application compatibility issues between Linux and Windows. But maybe later down the road.
orestes
if...

1. more games were supported without using Wine/Cedega

2. theyd get off thier lazy ass3s and make a linux client for Ventrilo

....I'd switch

I would, if it were made as brain-dead friendly as Windows is. (I'm a bit on the lazy side).

Did you get that link from my profile?
krmathis
Probably not.
But if it get better hardware support I would at least consider it... yes.gif
PureLogic
Definitely not!

I'm not very into the whole open source software, mainly because commercial application support is almost non-existant. I don't like being forced into open source just because it's the only thing available.

And Mac OS X is UNIX based, stable, looks stunning, user friendly and has both open source and commercial application support.

I found myself the perfect OS! biggrin.gif
insanekiwi
already tried debian, mandrake, suse, knoppix/gnoppix. i just don't know much enough to make it my main OS. and i'm a windows gamer tongue.gif
so i guess dualboot would be the best option.
lsdn
I would if there weren't such issues with devices (such as Parallel Scanners, USB Printers or Wireless Devices)
virtorio
If I needed to run a web server then sure, I am not opposed to having a Linux system running in console mode (which I find easier to use than the repulsive UI's like KDE and Gnome).

But I would never use it as a desktop system; Windows XP does everything and runs everything I want, hassle free. Not sure what other people's problems are, but I never have security or stability problems.

SOF 2 runs fine on Linux through WINE (plain free WINE, not WineX or Cedega required).

Heck NO! WFE (Windows Forever).
lunamonkey
I tried Mandrake 10 on Virtual PC (trial copy).
It was easier to install than XP, and better looking.
It's quite noob friendly, and I was impressed that I didn't have much trouble with it.
If I was to go to linux it would have to be as user friendly as Mandrake if not more. I'm not going to learn all the command prompt stuff, I have enough code to learn for web development, so something like redhat is a bit scary to me.

However, games support would have to be higher to get my 100% vote. And I have lots of legitmate games that I would have to dual boot to use. (A possibility). My windows Licence I could easily find an old pc to use on, or sell it.

At the moment, I would have no problem using it as a dev box, or movie player box, or email box or whatever, as long as it was hard to break (by user error). In fact, I might strip down my current movie box, and try Linux on it. Its a low spec machine, so it may get some extra kick outta a light weight distro.

At the moment, I am comfortable with the Windows enviroment, and setting up users, access, programs etc, I would have to re-learn all of that for Linux. I'm not too fussed about programs, I'm a freeware / opensource user mainly anyway.

For a new user, is Mandrake the recommended choice?

Gaurav Patel
I would if there was native WiFi support.
