alright there, ive recently been setting up a server/router in my house with fedora core 3.

as this pc is connected directly to the internet i needed a proxy program to share the net connection. currently i am using squid but i am unsure and doubtful if it allows socks support.

for myself its not a big deal but my friend really wants to use her msn messenger smile.gif

soo do any of you know of any good proxy programs that has support for at least http and socks.

there must be a million as there is for windows pcs.

ill do some searching tonight

Squid..? I am almost 100% that should work.

Anyway, you could just set up routing/NAT, so you dont need a proxy.

There is a distribution designed to be a gateway server. Not sure if it meets your needs, though:

Maybe, but back then a windows machine probably didn't have Stateful Packet inspection like IPTables always had.

You can also try www.ipcop.org or www.smoothwall.org

i was just using this server for the time being anyway as i want it primarly as a file sharing machine with ssh access, so i can watch movies and stuff wherever i am in the house.

after kciking myself in the teeth i realised that the internet sharing can just be done thru firewalls instead of proxies so instead of messing about with iptables i got firestarter... i sorted out my dns server as well..
