Hey guys this might be a stupid idea on a huge forum like this becuse of the cpu cycles it would use but anywho ive seen on some forums instead of having the post count they have a word count so the people that just post 1 word dont really get as big of count as someone that actually types up a huge answer

PS im not someone that cares about post count nor do i think others do confused.gif but if some people do i guess it might stop some idiots from doing 1 wordered posts
yisman
OK, so they'll spam with more words.

"OMG DATS SO AWESOME! NEOWINS PWNZRS!

w00t.gif w00t.gif w00t.gif w00t.gif w00t.gif devil.gif devil.gif devil.gif devil.gif devil.gif "

Then again, I don't even know if forums even have the capability to count words by poster.
jymi
i think we shuld abolish the ability for regular users to see their post count. if no one can see, it is less of an issue and there will be more quality posts instead of one worded posts which just say "thanks, congrats, haha, lol, etc".

just my 2 cents, but i think this issue has already been played out on this board.

My suggestion from another thread still stands:

Post count lock all of "general and off topic discussion". Post counts then would only increase for posts in the other more important sections of the forums.

As it stands, there have been over 1,100,453 posts in the general and off topic discussion, accounting for a quarter of the forums total posts. Post Count-Lock this, less people spamming (that really is the only word to describe what happens under there) to increase their post count, and it would encourage members to post in the other sections which make Neowin what it is.

well i can see someone spamming here but ok how about we get rid of the post count or so you can only see yours confused.gif but the titles are alright tho
itsnotmeeee
Post count should not even be shown!
But if there has to be something...then.....
Users should have rating, according to their helpfuless.
Fellow user can ask a question, and then once replied to, with good solution. the first poster should be able to give the replier a rating.
semaja2.net
thats a good idea but someone will just abuse there power
galoosh33
LOL! Then people would have like '5000,000 words' it's silly..

I agree that post count should be disabled on genral boards too, but this is not a must... the less attention post counts will get the better i think.
Sensayshun
I for one think that the post count is good. Admittedly there is spamming and I can't stand it in the jokes section where people will click on every thread and just quick post 'lol'. Gets them another 25, yippee.
Who gives a.......(insert expletive of choice here)

Also I don't think that the other sections are 'what makes neowin what it is' I think the cmmunity make neowin what it is and the ability to share with your community. Recently I had a question on what happens when a PSU dies. I could have posted this in the 'hardware hangout' but I thought as it would only need one or two people (to confirm) to write a couple of sentences it wasn't really worth it.

I don't see why good neowinians like that should be denied their post count just because I chose to post in a section that is supposedly full of spam.

Maybe an anti post count, so there was a little tick box and mods could actually do something useful and go through all the spam threads tick the little box and make those people get -5 post counts for posting spam.

Or a 'usefulness' section as well, just under where it says post count it could say 'usefulness' and go from -10 to +10. I believe that people would actually try to obtain their high usefulness count and I don't think anybody would be stupid enough to attempt to get the lowest usefulness count.

I reckon I'd get an 8 out of 10 for this smile.gif and I'd keep my post count as it isn't spam tongue.gif

But in combination with the post count and a little mathematics there could be a Words Per Post count yes.gif
dreamz
a word count would penalize people for posting concise answers (e.g. "how do i remove the recycle bin?" "tweakui.") and reward people who post unnecessarily long answers (e.g. "how do i remove the recycle bin?" "oh, well, it's really quite easy. all you have to do is download tweakui and you can remove it.").

post count doesn't really matter here. it's really the quality of the posts that matters.
illmonkey
What about a rating system that gives you marks ?

So when someone asks a question and gets loads of answers, some helpfull some stupid...

... the topic starter can award points to the best answer they got. Or mods could award the points for the most useful answer.
FiREFLi
Along these lines I've thought a little about a "resolved" section. I've seen it on other forums where once ther's an answer to a question it's marked as resolved and the thread cleaned to it's simplest question-answer-explanation form smile.gif

I've seen sites that work that way. The more content in your posts, the higher your "rank" or "rating". However, the loophole is to have a big quote in your post (shifty.gif) and then a small response that you actually type yourself

who cares about post count , i don't even know how many i have... i used to but not anymore... it's just a number.

excellent idea chode thumbs_up.gif

Keep it how it is. Its alot easier to tell who knows what around here by their post count and who you can trust. Espically on neobay. I dont think spamming is a real problem here at neowin. The mods do a GREAT job.

Like it or not, Neowin forums are not Tech only. The GD and other 'off topic' areas have grown the most for Neowin lately, and thus, increases member count. People enjoy a site with this much flexibility. Penalizing them jsut because they post in a non-tech forum wouldn't make good sense.
slang123
People who post one word dont really get much out of the community, thats why you rarely see someone who types one word replies have a high post count. When i see someone post with a big post count, i dont use that as a messurment of how much i should respect them, i just think "oh they've posted alot" and nothing more. It works just fine the way it is smile.gif

Or at least post count lock individual sections, like the Neowin milestones.

It would be great if IPB had the choice of having sites track post count OR community rating. We would love to see this implemented in IPB and yes I believe it would raise the overal quality of the forum in general.

And that is true for about every forum that has a General Discussion section at their forums, most of the time that section has the most posts. And usually members have "more fun" posting in those sections, just my 2 cents.

hahaha yea. I actually always wondered, why doesn't he speak? I've always wanted to know more about him. After investigation, I think he is in Europe, perhaps France.
