Well am I the only one who doesn't feel too excited over Tiger? I mean when Jaguar came out I remember (builds being leaked) and it just being the coolest thing ever coming out. Same thing with Panther. And now its Tiger, (not much leaks tho thats just a minor thing) basically we'll be seeing Panther, with a search box and a dashboard of things most of us will never use?

Tiger is a much bigger update than Jag or Panther.

Spotlight is not just a search box, it can be updated by developers with plugins and incorperated into applications. It also allows Smartfolders in the filesystem.

Dashboard will only get better over time. Once Tiger is released we'll start to see all kinds of widgets come out. Some useful, some not.

Automator will allow anyone to use AppleScript which is fantastic, and again is something that developers can add more functionality to with plug-ins.

There's also a new kernel that has been further optomized, improved Open GL, CoreImage, Quartx 2D Extreme, etc. We'll also get a faster version of Safari. There's also tons of little improvments like a built in PDF viewer in Safari, burnable folders in The Finder, PDF bookmarking in Preview, an updated Quicktime.

The coolest thing about Tiger is seeing what good developers can do with what Apple has provided.

Agreed 100%. I think Tiger is massive. Panther was so-so for me at best. Most of the additions were underneath. Tiger has huge additions on top and under.

Jaguar was easily the largest to date, but I think Tiger will be right up there.

I don't so a lot of gaming on OS X, but Tiger is supposed to considerably increase framerates over Panther

Probably not until Wednesday. That's normally when Apple deploys updates.

Tiger ranks No.1 on Amazon in both Electronics and Software category. Amazon's offering a $35 mail-in rebate, making the final price $94.99.

They're really not that great and a bit big to post 22 MB.

Edit:
You can't post them on Neowin btw. wink.gif

If so, could anyone (if any of you has it) post a screenshot of your desktop with the new Aqua wallpaper that (hopefully) comes with Tiger?
Timan
Hmm does Tiger even have a new wallpaper? So far every release (besides .1) had a new wallpaper.

Well, the WWDC build had a tiger-stripe wallpaper. Not sure about newer builds (although I'll find out in a few hours devil.gif ).

It won't be released on April 1st... it's an obvious joke...
Bling3k12
Apple was founded on April 1st...

And that was a huuuuge joke! rolleyes.gif

You never know... I have friends @ the Apple Store who have played with the latest and they say it's very nice. He could not confirm 8A425 though.
Timan
Yes Apple is an utter joke.

Here in the states(and possibly overseas) if your a registered student you can get Panther/Tiger for $69.
ahfunaki
You can get it for $70 if you are a student?
timmayXL
only through the online apple store (education), or so i heard
DouglasLWarren
See my updated post. ^^^ That's clipped directly from the Apple website.

I only know this because I used to work for an Apple reseller on a local college campus. We sold it for $69 in the store as well. We sold all our Apple products at the Apple Educational prices(including iPods).

And to think, I'm a Windows guy.. rolleyes.gif
