i am just installing windows nt4 server and do I want a domain controller or a stand alone server??
BudMan
If you have to ask that question - maybe your not the right person to be setting up the server? NT4 - really, a bit dated wink.gif

Is this going to be the ONLY server, and do you want a central user database? Do you know what a NT domain is?

What is the point of the install? If you don't know, I would bet your answer is no. BTW. are you doing a PPC install?
jumungo4
Which 1 plz??
I dont have a really good machine to run windows server 2003.
I might get windows server 2000 i am just playing with nt4 server at the moment.
it is the first time i have set up a server,i have done networking before though.
jumungo4

NT4 Server is old-school, I'll admit that but it's still fun. Just keep in mind, it's probaly a bad platform to learn off now-a-days since the setup of DNS is much easier, and that 2000 Server Introduced Active Directory, which NT4 lacks, which I feel is the one of the strongest points for the Operating System.

should i use stand alone and not domain controller?
Jaded
It really depends on what you want to do. Though if you are not creating a domain, choose stand alone.
jumungo4
how do you mean creating a domian-do you mean a website domain?
sorry to ask stupid questions.
primortal
an nt domain is completely different from a internet domain (website)
jumungo4
whats an nt domain-is it when you have several servers?
Jason
You have workgroup and domain, a domain is for centralised administration but it will involve a lot more work and require you to know what your doing.
primortal
nt domain have a centralize database of users so you don't create the same users on every server you have. Each server can be a member of that domain and use that centralize user database to log on to that server

An nt domain can have a single server. It can be defined as
QUOTE
A group of computers or devices that shares a common directory database and is administered as a unit. On the Internet, domains organize network addresses into hierarchical subsets. For example, the .com domain identifies host systems used for commercial business.

thanks,
i will choose stand alone.

I have install it all and the o/s part is working fine.
I picked domain controller because I want all the user names etc to be stored on the server,

I have a few questions though.
WINS-What is the primary win controller?
I can seem to pick up any other computers on my network nor can the computers pick the server up?
Do i need a DNS server??
Any1 got a guide for someone who has never set-up a server?
thanks

What client computers do you plan on using? XP home can not even join a domain.. All of the info you would need is included in HELP, or here is info on NT4 http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/techreso...ent/default.asp

What do you mean by "pick the server up" - can you ping machines by name, by IP address?
jumungo4
all the clients are xp pro.
no i cant ping machines from the server by name or ip address.
jumungo4
got it all working at last!
