My USb controller is working fine, but when I plug in a USB storage device like a jumpdrive or my Ipod it just says the device attached has malfunctioned, everything else is working fine such as my printer attached from USB, This started happening last night, I dont know what to do... I tried attaching it to different ports even, same issue...

Help is much appreciated...

Update any, and all drivers in your OS. Install all the latest OS updates, and make sure you have no viruses or anything malignant, Try plugging the device in different ports to see if maybe ones faulty. Install iPod drivers as well, just in case theyre corrupt. If any of that doesnt work, go into device manager and check the device. What error does it give you especifically? Report back with more info

Okay the device that I've plugged in doesnt even show up in the device manager, nothing is wrong in the device manager, however in the tray there is an icon the USB icon and when I click it, it shows me to which port the "unknown device" is attached, is it that my USB hubs drivers have gotten corrupted??

it just says that that device has malfunctioned... My mouse is USB so i doubt the hub is messed up physically otherwise my mouse wouldnt work either...

you know, i have the same problem....all my usb ports stopped working after i plugged in my digital camera and i got a malfunction device error. Since then i tried to reinstall my usb controller drivers to no avail and the thing is that in the Device manager it shows that my usb drivers are all working properly. So i would love to hear more opinions on this too.

thebuzz i have exactly the same problem as you do, for ipod my solution was to swtich to firewire cable. and one more thing....it seems i can still charge my ipod through the usb but it doesnt detect it

Yeah same problem, I think this is a windows issue, can we have some techs in the discussion now....

try putting your ipod in the port where the printer is. See if it works

no thats not working either, It seems like anything that is a USB mass storage device just keeps showing up as an "unknown" device attached to the USB root hub, The HUb drivers are fine and the hardware manager shows no issues...

just in case, updating the bios does not fix this problem sad.gif

don't bump. just the EDIT button.

all you need to do is update your motherboard drivers imo. so check your manufacteres website for newer chipset drivers.

Here is some suggestions i found on other forum

No do not think so, device manager is detecting them and telling you they are working properly.

Lets check a few steps out with a few questions first, are you plugging usb device in and then not getting the auto-detect box coming up, the one that asks you what action you want to take ?
when you attach the usb device do you hear a ding dong sound ? (put volume up) don't know how else to describe sound. but that is it detecting the usb device. If you open my computer under devices with removable storage do you see any devices ?

Did you try my earlier suggestion to uninstall the usb in device manager and reboot? if so did they detect them and install. you may need to unistall and reinstall any software you have for usb devices before they work ( printer, camara and so on). Do not have any usb devices attached when uninstalling !!!!

if not first check to see if the usb section is showing a mass storage device. if so uninstall in device manager ( single click mass storage device, at top of screen you will see an icon of a monitor with a red cross on it click this). it has been known if a usb device is not correctly removed from a pc a mass storage device is left showing in the usb section when you re-attach another device it will detect it but not bring up the auto-detect box as it points it towards the already detected mass storage device.
