taken from apples website:

Apple iPod Dock (new Click Wheel models)
The iPod Dock is an elegant home base for charging and synching with your computer or for connecting to your home audio system. Supports iPod with Click Wheel.

3G iPods were classified as "With Dock Connector", not "ClickWheel". You may be able to try, but remember that photo iPod docks can run slideshows through a TV, 3G docks cannot. Also, they may fit in the slot, but might not be snug, so you can possibly cause damage to some of the pins. Apple recommends against this type of thing.

If you use any type of case it won't fit in the dock anyway unless you take it out of the case. This is especially cumbersome when it comes to iSkin cases. If you're like me and hate scratches and fingerprints on the chrome you'll want a case. Unless you 'Brush' your iPod.

The 4G/iPod photo will fit in the old docks, but they are physically different sizes so you may have some issues. You shouldn't do it because it could cause an unreliable connection and/or damage the port on the iPod and the dock.
