Full Version: Live Chat Feature
Neowin Forums > Neowin Related Discussion > Site & Forum Issues
denominator
The fact of the matter is that alot of forums make this mistake. Live Chat is an amazing feature and very useful for members who want spur-of-the-moment questions to be answered.

The mistake here is that by clicking the Live Chat link, it does not spawn a new window and takes you off the forum and onto a Java client that has forum links everywhere.

If you want more members to use the Live Chat feature, you should make it spawn a new window and have little to no links to the forum in that spawned window, which ensures that members wont be tempted to close the Live Chat window and go back to the forum in 2 different windows.

Anyways, the forum is doing great in the large scheem of things. Possibly put my name in neon text on the top of the page with a link to a Paypal donation for myself. (To help me in my studies).. (cough).

Deno

I'd like to also remind Neowin.net that Java clients could be used in place of a LiveChat link, but also with it's own spawning window of course. wink.gif

What would be nice is if the Live Chat link opened a new window that would point to the irc.neowin.net so people without IRC clients can still access the chat area.

Well, Michael seems to like it! tongue.gif

A Java client is exactly what you suggested Frank. It directly connects you to the IRC network in an IE window.

The Live Chat is just for Michael, not you, man. laugh.gif

I think what Frank suggested would be a nice idea. I dont like to use mIRC because of the misuse of it, but in Java live chat, it always seems better, I would prefer that really, 100%.

What do you mean Misuse of it huh.gif ?

The java IRC would proberbly bring more uses to Neowin IRC i guess, but it would have to be registered users only IMO, We'd get a few too many idiots if now hmm.gif
JMann
Ok, well maybe its just me. wink.gif I would prefer to use a Java Applet because I don't want to install mIRC, and the same with other users, and isn't a free 30 day trial. thumbs_up.gif We'll see.

Theres always other Clients (XChat's supposed to be good), and you can continue using mIRC after 30 days, it doesn't actually do anything to stop you IIRC (This isn't illegal either i dont think confused.gif)

i barely used the livechat simply because it either didnt work or the mere fact that it's javabased. i prefer the irc thingie.
Storm
