I every week go to a site that says some things about MSN Messenger 5 For Mac.. well like 2 mont ago the developers says Mid-Later April... then they change the estimate date of release to first two weeks of May.. and today i got surprised because it says now Summer of 2005, its seek how Microsoft put the Mac people in the wall... They released "2" builds of MSN Messenger 7 in "2" weeks... and how can they release "1" final build of MSN 5...

By the same token, Apple shouldn't make QuickTime for Windows (or iTunes for that matter). How about no Windows compatible iPods while we are at it? Remember that the only way Microsoft makes money off MSN Messenger (on either platform) is from the advertising. Do you think they really care if that advertising money comes from Windows or the Mac? Maybe if Microsoft's used more cross-platform friendly code, they wouldn't take so long porting things from Windows to the Mac. The Mac Business Unit is one of the most profitable divisions at Microsoft.

Well it isn't called MSN Messenger anymore, but Microsoft Messenger 5 for Mac or in shot Messenger 5 for Mac. They're probably adding new features, but it seems they're focussing on the business accounts more rather than on the personal.

Well, that was exactly my point. Microsoft would be stupid to ignore one of their most profitable markets, just as Apple would be if they stopped making stuff for Windows.

I think Microsoft will more than manage if they're dropping Messenger for Mac support. We probably can't say the same thing about the iPod sales.

That's not true.
MSN is the mainstream IM network outside of the U.S. It's reasonable to assume that most people have friends who use Macs. If MS drops support for Messenger for Mac, people will be forced to use alternative chat network to communicate with their Mac friends. MS makes messenger for Mac not because of the negligible ads revenue from it. They do it so that people wouldn't ditch MSN for another chat cross-platform protocol.

It would be a real shame if Microsoft Dropped MSN Support for mac. Maybe apple should come out with iMessenger for MSN . Probably would be better then what microsoft has right now. Just like Apple made there own browser and then Microsoft stopped making Internet Explorer for Mac and admited that they couldnt keep up with safari.

... After a second look, maybe it's the OVERLY LARGE "send" button. Good grief, if they did some usability testing I am sure they would find most people use the "enter key" for sending instant messages anyway. That button's size is just unnecessarily awkward.

Perhaps the button's size is large compared to other clients, but if you compare MSN Messenger for Windows with any other IM client for Windows, you'll see the same results. That's just the way Microsoft likes it I guess--a huge send button

Just use adium 0.8beta. the current version of MSN for mac is horrible, and I expect this release to be trash too.

I would have been more disappointed if I hadn't heard that iChat in Tiger will be able to access your MSN contacts via Jabber, or if they actually had some worthwhile features being added like proper file tranfer support, video/audio conferencing.

I do still use the official MSN Messenger client, but I've been trying to drop it.

And, i hope they possibly allow changing between metal and normal, and possibly the new style on tiger. Cause i really dont like the brushed metal.

Actually I find the 1 billion preference options in Adium more horrible than MSN Messenger for Mac.

Yes lets use Adium which will not allow you to unblock contacts, limits your upload to 5kbps when sending files, has a few second lag when sending msgs to other people i.e. 2 - 3 seconds after you send a msg they then receive it (I have had lots of complaints from my contacts about this) and has so many preferences even I think "wtf..".

Microsoft designed MSN and we want an official client not some half assed attempt by a 3rd party.

lol, I've never heard of people complain about too many features. I use Adium, love adium, and have tried the official clients for AIM, MSN, and Y! on OS X. Adium is volumes better.

I can't even sign in with msn 7.0.... And microsoft is aware of the problem.

its just way to bloated on the customisation menu's if they made it CLEANER and easier to find what you want to change then it would not look so bloated and I would not be moaning. If any of you have used MsgPlus! on Windows for MSN Messenger (www.msgplus.net) the way it lays out its configuration menu is the best I have ever seen on any application on any platform period.

It's working for me, using it as we speak.

It works for some and doesn't work for others. I'm behind a router and 7.0 won't sign in. Though 6.2 works perfectly. On my other pc 7.0 works fine.

To be fair, the 0.8 betas have gone a long way into actually organising the preference menus, but I do agree that there can seem to be a lot. I happen to like the customisation aspect of it, but I can understand that some people might just want a client that works.

Oh, and the new betas handle blocking/unblocking pretty well for me, and my file transfers usually peak at around 12kb/s. Not amazing, but an improvement.

Did they equip Adium with a proper contact list already or does it still exists out of a few floating bubbles on the desktop?

I would love adium if they would quit spending their time making up new features and just make the damn thing work consistently. The 'cool' effect of the software runs out after about the 5th crash, or the 3rd time you need to do something it doesn't support/impletment correctly like blocking, file sending, etc...
