Firstly I'm one of those people who believes that Server is for servers and 2K/XP is for clients. That is my personal belief, but that is not the topic of this thead.
There seems to be more and more threads relating to "Server as a workstation". I would like to see a section where people can post threads about "Server as a workstation" that is not in the same place as serious server threads.
Things like "How do I get Doom3 to run on my server?" have no place along side genuine server related questions.
This post is not about whether people should use Server as a workstaion. Its about keeping related questions together.

I don't think the demand is very high for this type of section. A lot of people who were using Windows 2003 as workstation are now using Windows XP x64 since it is built on the Windows 2003 core.
But, I am sure some people have Windows 2003 as a server but would still like to play some cool games on them.

this should be in site & forum issues anyway imo. and there's no need to split up this subforum even more.
I think it'd help settle some flamewars, keep people within their respected areas. Well, thats what I would do (Just stay in the real server area..)
Good idea, but not sure if the mod's would go for it...

Ditto, there is a post about this in the Site & Forum Issues forum. Though amusingly, the people who complain all the time about people posting Server as a Workstation questions, were also complaining about the possibility of a seperate forum to deal with the questions so they didn't have to. o__O

I must say that this would be a great idea. Whether or not if it's the same OS system, I think since this is such a hot topic, they're two different concepts. I personally come here to answer tech questions regarding typical server operations. I do not consider running Windows 2003 as a desktop "typical" and I don't think the rest of the IT world does either.
That said, adding a sub form I think would cut down on the flames and aggressiveness since our form isn't being cluttered with stuff that we don't find relevent to topic. And I think I say for everyone that cutting down on that stuff makes Neowin better.

Question, should maybe the two thread creators for this one and the one on S&F Issues PM the admins? If so, which one? o.O

I think what some of us are looking for (me included) is to use this forum for help in using Servers and high end equipement in a business context. I use servers at home for testing and I maintain about 100 of them. I feel that some questions should be in here and should be in the Gamer forum. Because installing a 256 MB video card in a server is rare among otherthings. So yeah another forum for the "I use Windows 2003 server to play games at home" and "I use Windows 2003 server in a business enviroment"
Also can we post the "How to Configure DNS" and the "How to Setup AD" in the top of the page.
That would be great, there are so many questions regarding DNS and most of the time it's because DNS is not setup properly.
My two cents

I personally think you will have more luck if you ask for a "[Definitive] Windows 2003 as a Workstation" thread and have all the newly created 2003 Workstation threads merged into that one.
But yes, this thread should be in S&FI. Ask a green mod (or a super) to move it.

It's not like walls would be built around the sections, you'd still have the bickering. It would just be in more places with the addition of sub-forums.
Moved here

Firstly thanks for moving the thread.
Its not that we want to build walls, its just that a lot of us are getting tried of seeing posts about server as a workstation in a section that is ment to help people manage server. It is obvious in 99% of the cases that the OS is not purchased, or is 120 day trial used to avoid paying for an OS. But I'm not going to go into the "pirate" debate here.
Genuine server questions are move the thread to Clients!

Me included, but I'm not sure the 3 members who persist in posting about it need a forum to themselves.

Can't anything be done about it then? There seems to be a fair amount of support on this one. You know like when people ask for help on bypassing some kind of security or licensing?

Threads asking for help circumventing Microsoft's security and/or licensing should be closed. Report those threads.

In a lot of cases people are using the 120day trials as workstation OS, which is getting close to going against the EULA. Infact someone recently stated that they just reinstall the 120 day trial over and over.
