I think that members should have the option to delete their posts (not threads), for like three minutes or something. this way they can have a chance to delete double posts and stuff.
smooths*
sounds like a good idea, i'd use that smile.gif helpful for clumbsy people to that post in the wrong board tongue.gif ..

cough..me me..
Coldfaith
I think It's a good idea, I mean. Why not? Mods can already see deleted threads/posts, what's the difference if you can delete your own post? Maybe a poll would've been a good idea.
shockz
Nope.

It's not that hard for us to delete a post. Contact us if we don't see it right away.
y0sh
lol why don't they trust us to delete our own posts?
smooths*
bring on the poll ! lol should be the same idea as with editing you're post, have a time limit just like this could have yes.gif

Because people would abuse the Privilege. No doubt people would be posting stupid comments, flamming eachother, curses, anything against the rules then deleting their posts.

Simply edit your post with <double post> or whatever.

I just see too many problems with this.

And people can't do this with being able to edit their posts? Its the exact same thing, just allows the user to delete double posts, there is no downside that editing doesn't already have.

I totally agree.

Members have no need to delete posts.

Doesn't the button grey out after you click it?

Click, server busy, back, click.

Not in firefox... I think.
This sounds like a good idea, although the only people who double post are people who are too lazy to wait for the server to load...

Well usually if the server is busy when your post is going through... it will save your post in a box for you to copy and repaste. If you don't get that box that says "post data saved", then its probably posted.
Chode
in times when Neowin is having "difficulties" it happens easily.

I don't ever double post and I know this ability would probably never be added anyways, which is fine for me. Does not matter either way.

But I don't see how you think people would abuse the privilege. Neonemesis did say in his topic title and post that it should only be for like 3 minutes. I think there would be no problem or abuse if it were to be say, 1 minute. 1 minute would be fine and perfect, if ever considered which Neowin coders have other things to do first anyways.

Lets say it was a minute. Someone who would flame, post a stupid comment, curse, or whatever, and then delete their post within the minute, needs a lot of help in my opinion. Who would actually read that post within the minute, not many, if any at all.

@shockz, not always does that page appear where you can save what you wrote. I know this and have been really ****ed off afterwards if I wrote something long and did not think to save it because I did not think I'd have a problem posting. Not always is it posted either, yes, sometimes, it has been. smile.gif

Oh well though, the ability to do so is not a big deal for me. If Neowin adds it, they do, and it will be useful if it were ever needed. If not, it's still fine, you can just PM a moderator for that forum/global moderator as shockz said.
....
It will never happen as it is an easy way to abuse the system. This is pretty concrete. Sorry.
Chode
I'm not whinging, nor questioning staff decisions....

I'm just curious as to how a member could abuse the system with it? Have I lost my anti-authoritan edge? sad.gif
emo
i think editing is enough. they should just make the time for editing so theres no time limit. besides that, deleting is what mods are here for.
smooths*
i'm not sure if guys are getting this, we wan't to have the option to delete our own post, not anyone elses just like we do with "edit" post, as we can only edit ours no one elses. So i don't see how this can be classed as abuse since it would only be our own posts that we are deleteing.

I still think it would be cool none the less.
The Jorge
It'd be nice to be able to do that sometimes, but I don't think its necessary. Just get a mod to do it. thumbs_up.gif

Actually, that's not really true. Some people experience unreliable connections to Neowin, especially me, but all other sites appear fine. It is because the neowin server is so busy, they have to handle thousands of connections at once. They struggle to keep providing content to thousands of computers and thus that would bring it down, forcing some of us to wait a bit longer or face the "Server is busy" messages. The pages does load, but we instead get "Sorry, the server is too busy...blah...blah.." message.

This would be a good feature for those with unreliable connections (especially dialup connections), but as mods already said, they will handle it for you.
cyoung1616
I think it would be more useful if you could edit the title of your thread. Lots of times people misspell or use all caps and can't go back and change that. Give it the same time limit as editing a post or something. Not that I make that many threads.

if you "sub"? what's that...? sorry it's probably something really obvious but i haven't quite got it here.

anyway, i don't think a delete feature is necessary. just editing a double post and saying "sorry, double post" seems to be enough.

well if someone goes as far as writing a post, hoping the person hes flaming sees it before mods do, and then deletes it before 3 minutes is up must be desperate. and i doubt that it would happen

not too mention that the mod that added the poll forgot that i said you should only be able to delete the posts for like 3 minutes other wise, yes ppl would abuse it.

not always ive had server busy come up and sometimes the message still gets posted sometimes it doesnt so you go back and post and suddenly find youve double posted.

or you press submit and it looks like nothing has happened yet it has (have had it before on various boards)

or just some werid internet/computer issue hat means that for some reason you get an error instead of the usuall you have posted screen e.g a 404

or you have a stupid moment and post somit and then think Why the hell did i just post that:rolleyes: (do it all the time)
yisman
It would make a lot of sense for members to be able to delete their own posts.

On invision board software, when a mod (or you if you had the ability) deletes a post, your post count doesn't automatically subtract it. So you can see the massive room there is for abuse.

I personally like the idea of being able to delete my own post(s), even if it takes me down on post count (which it really should), however, I understand and agree that there would be a few trying to abuse the system.

Maybe this could be an ability only for subscribers?

The script that recounts posts would affect everyone, AFAIK.
Jesse Carlton
would mods be able to see the posts that users deleted if they were able to, then totally allow it, it's no different than edit, just would keep things neater in the end.

and I don't really think the issue with the post count going up is an issue at all, I for one don't check or care what a person's post count is, especially because people with the most posts post useless one word replies or start flame wars / are trolls.
Toastyone
I don't really see a reason for this...if you are the thread starter you can always just blank your thread so there is nothing there and ask a Mod to close it wink.gif Thats fine by me

yes it automatically puts it in its own thread in the "trash bin"
Jesse Carlton
then allow it, and allow to edit titles. mods should be here to answer questions, keep the peace, and kick people out when they're being offensive. that's it.

[off topic] it would also be cool if the quote buttons under each post worked for quick reply, I hate having to load a new page to type a post in[/off topic]
