I just singed up for the WUS RC and its downloading right now. CUrrently, I dont really have any patch management at all, except myself

I run about 50 machines and I would like to use some kind of automated patch managing software.... Do you guys recommend WUS and if so, do u know of any sites or resources to help me set it up?
THanks!

We just started using it for our school and belive me; it makes applying the downloads alot easier and cuts down on network traffic.

It needs MS SQL, right?

Yes.
Well technically it can run on the MS SQL Desktop Engine which is free.
I dont know about you but i've had XP clients having troubles with Windows installer 3.1 beta which crashes some machines.

i dunno, but it might not run on MSDE, as the last released MSDE version was based on an older version of sqlserver.

I'm running right now using MSDE. Works fine. Only problem I've had was Win 2k computers not auto rebooting.

also another thing is if you run something like ISA 2k4(i think that was it) it will stuff it up, so i cant use MSDE becuse it wont work on my server anyway

I have it running here as well,
It runs on a dedicated wsus server, and I think it's really a nice solution.
I use it in combination with group policy, and manage about 100 pc's with it. I'm also planning in the near future to deploy another wsus server in another related organisation (other city) so I can approve the updates at one location, but to prevent unnecessary bandwidth I can let them download there updates from windowsupdate.
I think it's a quite nice solution to manage updates.
EDIT:
if you don't have MSDE installed, WSUS Setup will ask you to install a new instance during the setup.

Agreed. It beats paying for software to do the same thing or having to patch all of the computers yourself.

Decline that update, as if you havent synch'd in the last week, the final should be there now.

Yep however if you have approved the update then had the error you have to manually remove it. You cant use decline or remove as it never gets installed to remove. Luckily it was only my test group.

Yah I'm having a problem on my own machine now where a SQL Server 2000 post SP3 patch keeps getting pushed to my machine... I'm trying to find the KB article of where WU keeps saying the patch isnt applied although it is and how to fix it so this stupid annoyance goes away, lol
