This keeps happening when I browse while downloading files in Opera8. Locking up completely.
This is getting very frustrating!

I'll give it a try. I had it set at 50mb.

Nope. Didn't work. It did the same thing.
I was downloading a single 3 gig file and browsing with 3tabs open and watching the sys resources and it slowly krept up to about 128,000k and then locked up my desktop completely.
I never had this problem with FF. I like opera otherwise, but this is borderline totally unacceptable. I'm about this close || to switching back to the fox.

You're using a browser to download a 3gb file? Use a download manager...

Yeah, but I've also had this happen downloading 100mb files and it only happens while I'm browsing. C'mon, any browser should handle downloading any file size, I've downloaded numerous files around this size in Firefox and easily continued browsing and working on my other apps without any problems, and the memory usage did not continually increase during the progress of the download. And to think I paid for this . I actually thought everthing else about this browser was great, but this is just a pain. I rarely download files this size, but file size isn't the problem considering it happens with smaller files.

Can anyone suggest a download manager? Maybe I'll give that a try.

I've downloaded many DVD ISO's using opera, and i see no reason why file size should cause this problem. Have you tried the opera forums ?

How much RAM do you have?

Maybe try restarting Opera after setting Memory Cache to a low figure...

I download 700+Mb files all the time and I normally have 20+ tabs open at once.

I havn't noticed any slowdown or increase in resources (the most I have ever seen opera use was about 90,000k)

I have 1gb DDR2 RAM and an AMD 2700+ Processor. I'll try the memory cache again.

No luck. This time rather than locking up windows it just flat out gives me a windows error message asking me to "End Now".
And this is on another machine with similar specs.

Okay, I just tried the same thing using firefox on a machine with only 256mb of DDR RAM. I had 20 tabs w/sites loaded open while downloading the same 3gb iso file and had a Quicktime VR file open and running inside of firefox. No problems what-so-ever.

I'm done.

Are you using the latest version of Opera? (8.0 Final, build 7561)

I suggest that if you do decide to try keep Opera working, making a post over at the official Opera forums (my.opera.com)

You must have a very fast computer, because with my 512mbs of ram, firefox can't handle 20 tabs and downloading at the same time, it crawls. That's with Firefox 1.0.3.

hahahaha! I just had this problem. With opera eating all my resources. And a couple other bugs as well. I love mouse gestures though. Guess what? Firefox has them also as a plugin! Bye bye opera!!!

Well considering that this is one browser that you have to pay for, I would have expected more in return. Final version seemed like a pre-beta to me.

Actually Chode, it's over 2 million as of a few days ago. Probably approaching 3 million if you include the 500k from download.com, and other places its been downloaded from (i personally went directly to majorgeeks.com).

Make a new account of the computer and see if it still happens could just be os being stupid.

All software has bugs. Firefox 1.0 can't render Slashdot correctly, for example, and it's one of the biggest Firefox fanboy sites!

Please don't say goodbye to Opera

Browsers can display this kind of problem when there is a flaky Windows installation.
For a start off, how much free space do you have left on your C: drive?
Is your current uptime in excess of a week? Have you run your basic system maintenance such as defrag?
etc . . .

I'll be switching back to opera. I guess they fixed the problem...I read it somewhere. I'm just waiting now to hit my 250hit mark with the affiliate program.

Do you keep a GMail window open while downloading and/or surfing? It's a known problem (memory leak). Fixed in 8.01 TP.

I have had Opera at 150 MB many times. It's normal.

If Opera need more memory AND there is free memory, Opera will use it.
BUT, Opera WILL free memory if other programs need it.

So, what are you all complaining about?

The problem, I think was, my RAM went bad. One of my 2 chips just crapped out on me last week and I had to spend all weekend to pinpoint the problem. Opera is still the best IMHO. Thanks everyone for the help.

Memtest 86+ my friend, Memtest 86+. Also, though I suppose you can download 3GB files with any browser with more or less success, I'd still strongly recommend using a download manager for that - just for the better control, scheduling, resume(well Opera does do resume, but just saying) of a program that is dedicated to that result. Being that I don't mind paying for software (heretic I know), I strongly recommend Getright. Getright Pro is a better version coming out soon (that costs more, I'm paying to upgrade) that offers more support for different programs and FTP servers than Getright itself does.

I had also used GoZilla with much success long ago, but I guess it's likely it was spyware and I just didn't know it back then
