would it be worth buying the new osx?
would it even work?

plz dont tell me to buy a new ibook, i dont have that kind of money

the processor should be fine. the ram is a little low. 256 is the minimum and 512 or more is recommended. the hdd is a little small if you have lots of files tiger needs 3gb of space.

OS X 10.4 won't natively install on your laptop. It requires FireWire and a DVD drive (although you CAN get a CD version for an extra $10) for installation, which your machine does not have. Yours is just basically one model below the requirements. It does meet the requirements for 10.3 however.

Apple places certain system requirements (such as FireWire) to differentiate which models are officially supported. They did the same thing with Panther (10.3), which required USB. You can find a copy of 10.3 several places online, such as eBay or www.macsales.com. I think Macsales has it for about $30 now. They also carry Jaguar (10.2) for about $18, but Panther would be worth the extra cost, IMHO.

edit: I have an extra piece of RAM that I could sell you, but it's only 64MB. If I remember right, your machine has a single slot, plus 64MB built on board, so you have a 64MB piece in the slot already. If you find a 128MB piece to replace it with, you would have 192MB, which would be OK (although not great) for running either Jaguar or Panther.

I'd recommend buying that RAM you found, along with Panther (OS X 10.3). That will be a good combination for your machine.

Tiger would actually run well on his machine (once he upgraded the RAM), but the fact remains that it won't install because his computer doesn't have FireWire or a DVD. Panther would be his best bet.

Tiger is actually FASTER than Panther on the same hardware (just as Panther was faster than Jaguar).

what are some major differences between panther and jaguar?

besides speed i guess, what is a reason for me not buying that jaguar on ebay?

also, how easy would it be to upgrade from mac os 9 to mac os x

Journaled HFS+ (present in Jaguar, but you had to go to a lot of trouble to enable it)

Wow, 10.0 had some cool dock features. Instead of just disappearing, minimized windows moved back over to the to the application icon when the app was hidden. It also looks like all of the menu extras were in the dock back then, sort of like dashboard is now.

you're being slightly too paranoid - it's just a computer, you can delete old OSes

Let's sum this all up...

Tiger will most likely run well on your machine IF you upgrade the RAM to 256 or more. At 128 it will still run, but you may get sluggish when having more than one app open.

Tiger comes on a DVD. Apple has a media exchange program. You send them your Tiger DVD and $10 and they send you back Tiger on CDs. Although if you buy Tiger than I don't think there's anything wrong with getting a CD from *erm* someplace else.

Your machine doesn't have firewire, which is a requirement for Tiger. It's not that it won't run without it, that's just how Apple starts differing what machines can run the OS (for panther you needed a machine that natively has USB). There is a program called XPostFacto(sp?) that will let you install OS X on unsupported machines. There is no drawback as far as I know to the program. It's not available for Tiger yet but they say it's coming soon.

At this point in time, you don't want to go much further back than Panther. Jaguar is almost as old as WindowsXP at this point, and is lacking a majority of the features that make OS X as enjoyable as it is to use. That's not to say it's not a usable OS, but spending money on it when you can get Panther or Tiger which are much much more recent and much much better is simply not beneficial.

You can buy Tiger, the upgrade from OS 9 is not painful, you can delete OS 9 after installing Tiger (it's literally that easy - just delete the OS 9 folder), and as long as you're willing to upgrade the RAM (or deal with sluggish performance with multiple apps open) and use the XPostFacto hack to install it you'll have no troubles.

When you get the Panther CD's, put the first install CD in the drive, and reboot, holding down the C key after you hear the gong (that will make it boot from the CD). After you agree to the license agreement, one of the screens will have an "options" button, click that and you will be given some choices. Choose "format and install". When you get to the next screen (I think), you will have a customize button. Click it and de-select any foreign fonts and languages you don't need (hint: if you don't understand the language, you don't need it! LOL ). Same thing goes for the print drivers, install only what you need (but you should install the GIMP drivers, they add some extra printer support over what the official ones do). Doing this will save you at least several hundred MB's (which you are going to appreciate since you only have a 6 GB drive). Then let it do it's thing. If you don't intend to do any development work, you don't need to install the 4th CD (XCode, the white CD).
