Apple places certain system requirements (such as FireWire) to differentiate which models are officially supported. They did the same thing with Panther (10.3), which required USB. You can find a copy of 10.3 several places online, such as eBay or www.macsales.com. I think Macsales has it for about $30 now. They also carry Jaguar (10.2) for about $18, but Panther would be worth the extra cost, IMHO.
edit: I have an extra piece of RAM that I could sell you, but it's only 64MB. If I remember right, your machine has a single slot, plus 64MB built on board, so you have a 64MB piece in the slot already. If you find a 128MB piece to replace it with, you would have 192MB, which would be OK (although not great) for running either Jaguar or Panther.
