Well, I've had some time on my hands to think and was wonderin' how to become a mod...do you have to post a heap of messages or just get appointed?
Hypercube
Read the FAQ, it helps. Secondly it would also help to search the forum. Thirdly, I believe the mods vote on what the next mod would be. smile.gif I still want to be one. biggrin.gif

Yeah I think they vote on it. Well if they do vote, then they can throw me into the list of possible users that could be mods. I would love to be a mod. smile.gif

wouldn't we all wink.gif
aco
Yes, wouldn't everyone. :cheeky:

To answer your question, you definately don't have to post a heap to become a mod and one of the admins will ask you - not the other way around. wink.gif

...If you wan't some pointers. biggrin.gif
  1. Definately don't break any of the rules.
  2. Help people with their problems.
  3. Try not to loose your cool.
There's no gaurantee, but that's what is looked for. smile.gif

i think you have to go in the back room with keldyn and "earn" it wink.gif
modem
I'm just thankful the mods on here haven't become like what I've seen on IRC servers in the past where they have this quota to meet or they have to go word for word in choosing a op/mod. Usually in the end there are more ops/mods than users and everyone tries to be the owner and it kills everything.

As long as Neowin keeps away from that and adding as they need and adding trustworthy knowledgeable and reliable mods, they'll remain a top site for years to come. Thats been proven time and again online and at the job in real life. smile.gif

Mr magoo
you have to bring something new to neowin- its not about post count. when i became a mod, mine was about 100 - almost nada. Equally- ntuser is still on about 200 - hence- you dont have to spam the baords to become a mod.
Osiris
Post counts come later like Keldyn,

when your a mod, you just move every thread around and about and backwards and forwards and watch ya count go up, dont ya keldyn tongue.gif

hehe and twist, funny comment mate tongue.gif
Neobond
We require all mods to buy admin ice cream on a regular basis
configure
Osiris, nah.. we have our own secret forum where we do nothing but spam and post crap to increase our post count biggrin.gif

i think the ice cream would be just a little squishy by the time it got from MN, US to holland... squishy... what a great word.. just turn to a co-worker(if you are at work) and say it, or yell it out if you are at home... it will make the world a better place somehow

i would like to be a mod smile.gif but ummm i have been a naughty boy b4 sad.gif

Definately don't break any of the rules. oooops

IMHO...

A good Mod isn't someone looking to be a Mod, they are just someone who is there to help people out when they need it... TRYING to prove you're going to be a good Mod, in my mind, just shows someone who is trying to get into a position of power without possibly understanding the responsibility of it...

Just my $0.0000002.
Mr magoo

another person from brum!!!!

azazel-
Well, first you need a parchment made of human skin...then you draw some of your blood, and write out a contract with it. Make it sound real dark and sinister, and be sure to mention your soul in it a few dozen times. Next, go out and buy some black candles and...er...

What was the question again?

That basically sums it up nicely. Quite well said. Mod status is granted, based on merit.

I gotta agree. If i can add a few more cents *digs around in the pocket* it's not about trying to become a mod either. I remember back on IRC everyone's goal was to be that IRCop for what? To use the /kill function on the person they disliked the most.

Being a mod definately isn't what it's cracked upto be at least in the eyes of others. Too many people want the title and fizzle out quickly, but the real job is for those who enjoy getting up every morning surfing two dozen news pages for even the smallest .00002 version upgrade in drivers. It's for those who don't personally get involved in the boards, but watch over with a weary eye for certain things. Honestly if I was asked to be a mod, I'd really have to think about that because living upto the standards to be that is something I'm not sure I could do and I know alot others couldn't.

It's a job you have to love for the fun of it.

And of course meeting Keldyn out behind the woodshed only helps. ;-)

i would not mind being a mod, but i am not going to beg for the job since i have some other things i have to do (school, family, etc.) that comes before any internet forum. i try to help people the best i can, and i try to keep my cool, but sometimes i lose it. i would be a mod if you asked me to, though.

Thats a good description of being a mod, most peeps dont realise its not always easy or fun.

Some times we get abuse, sometimes were idolized but we always get the job done

In the month or so I've been a mod, I've had more people slag me off then the entire time I've been here.

You take a different view of the boards as well, you're not just a member any more...
NTUsEr

Well said. We do our best to keep all you guys happy. Personally, I'm happiest when when ppl understand when I move / edit / delete posts and appreciate the job we do. The only thanks we really want is to see you guys keep coming back, and for you to recommend us to one and all. ;D

Obey the rules and nobody gets hurt wink.gif

A lot of you guys will not know me... I'm primarily a newsposter and also a mod for the nano-second when Keldyn isn't about LOL. I tell ya - I spent loads less time on duty than many members of staff yet I spend a good 2-3 hours per day on average either posting, searching for news, communicating with fellow staff, responding to PM's or modding.

As has been said sometimes it is not that much fun... i'm either knackered in work the next day or the gf is hacked off with me. But I tell ya what, I love it. I'm glad to be able to help out, and love being part of the best site around.

Gotta go... Staff email to read.
Neobond
The best way to become a mod is a)never start threads asking. b)never participate in threads asking

but seeing as you guys didnt know this its only valid from this post.

When we need mods we have a shortlist of pre-determined members that we think will do well to help us. We try not to use more staff than we need.
