Hey,
Had an idea for a mod which PM's you every time you are quoted

. Personally I would find it very useful because I usually reply to a few posts at once and sometimes don't really have any interest in following the thread any further. This mod would mean though that if someone has something to say regarding what I said, I would be informed and would then be able to reply!
What do you think?

that would be crazy. think about it:
you post something in topic 1,2,3,4 and 5.
then another person quotes you -> message (takes server engergy)
then yet another person quotes you too -> message (...)
then someone quotes you in all your topics you've posted (let's say 10 topics) and you should get 10 messages.
i mean if you go offline and about 50 persons have quoted what you have quoted then you're pm box will be filled up fast and we will get the "server too busy" message a lot.
this is hardly doable....

Hrmm so then possibly not a PM. Just some method of indication that you have been quoted. Even if it's a little alert at the top.

I'd just continuously quote whatever particular retard was annoying me that day. (I wouldn't really, but i'm pretending i'm, a less "thoughtful" neowinian to show how silly the idea is.)

even if it's a small message it's impossible...
you know what you can do? bookmark your important topics and check them everyday. you'll know if you got quoted then too.

It would be quite handy in regard to things such as flaming, copyright etc. but as stated above the servers would have a fit... Maybe something really simple as a FF plug-in or something could be done? That way it wouldn't be over-used.

I do bookmark every now and then but this is the scenario I'm mainly thinking about.
I help a lot over in web & graphics discussion. Sometimes I post an answer to someones question which they may not understand. Once I've replied I'll go off to another forum and see what's going on there however the person over in web and graphics needs further help. If they quote what I said and I get alerted that they have, I can then return to that thread and help them further. Otherwise I may overlook that thread and not realise that person still needs help.

I do understand you but for a big forum as Neowin this is practically impossible. Not because it's not a good idea but because of the server load.
Maybe an option to track certain posts.
You can select something like:
"Alert me when this post has been quoted"
Similar to thread tracking.
I think it's a good idea, would require a decent amount of coding though!

Yeah that's pretty much what I'm saying. Would it really put such a big load on the server to have a "thingy" at the top (what you see when you get a PM) that just says "you have been quoted, Click Here to view your post)"?

click 'track" topic... beside the quick reply box..

thats the best they are willing to do. adding a feature like that, would take too much bandwith out of the server

I do think it's a good idea, I like to know when I've been quoted so I can reply. I rarely do though because there's no easy way of finding out.
One question to you Dan, do you have thread notifications on by default? That way you have a list of replied to threads in your control panel. From there you can check any with new posts since you posted and have a look if anyone's quoted you if there are new replies. That's what I tend to do at the moment.
As I said, I think it's a pretty good idea but finding a was to effectively implement it may be the hardest thing to do

No I don't like using thread tracking because as I said sometimes I have no interest in how the rest of the thread goes and so therefore I just forget about it. That's why if we could get alerts when we've been quoted, it would be so much easier

You can catch when you were quoted and messages posted towards you through the search feature. Just search for your username in posts and show the search results in post form.

Indeed deepfriedmario. Danellis the feature you are trying to include here on Neowin will just take too much bandwith. There has been a suggestion so you can click when you quote but even that would take bandwith, because a lot of users would keep on clicking that.
Not saying it wasn't a good idea though

I don't really like this from a moderators perspective.
If some other member were to be a bad boy and say something not that nice to you then you would find out about it a lot quicker. That could result in a flame war erupting before a moderator has had a chance to cull it.
Right now, there is an good chance that an unaffected member will find and report it before the victim is even aware of it (or a moderator could stumble upon it on their own).
That's just something I would worry about given my perspective.

Good point fred, but that's not really an issue here on Neowin I suppose. If the "victim" is a grown up man I am sure he will not start a flame war. The best way of dealing with ignorant kids is to ignore them.
