What do you guys find so fun about golf?

Just about my entire office plays golf, *all* of the managers at the last place I worked played golf...in fact, they had their own tournament. Everyone who plays loves it and seems obsessed with it.

So I'm asking you guys who play...why do you play and how do you find hitting a small ball all over the place fun?
Kriz
I sometimes go down the driving range, it can be quite relaxing. I guess hitting a little thing as hard as you can does it for some people tongue.gif
The Professional
To be honest I have tried it several times and I never could really get into. Maybe it has to do with some people like quite and nothingness. Me myself I like activeness.
WarStorm
I used to play every week when i was younger. I found it relaxing. I used to do it before my football match on saturdays. It can also be quite competative.

I watch people when we drive past the golf course, and they are with their friends. But no one ever looks like they are talking to eachother. They just hit a ball, and then walk after it.

It doesn't seem like a good way to be with your friends, or even be fun.

Because hitting a ball 300 yards is an awesome feeling.

Golf is a great game. Nice and relaxing, and challenging. You basically play against yourself every time you go out there. Nothin like it.
Yorak
It is just a fun and relaxing game. Plus, alot of rich people play golf, so maybe if you meet someone on the course one day they might offer you a job. tongue.gif

But seriously, it's relaxing and it does feel good driving a ball 300 yards.

Golf just takes so much skill and mental ability. I just LOVE it so much. Right now I'm a 12 handicap smile.gif

I shot a 73 this past weekend...best round since college. smile.gif

ChicoCahill
nothing is better than going to play a round with a couple of friends

golf is a game for rich people. if you play golf and tennis you will have a much greater chance for socilizing with the right people.

as for poorer crowd - a lot of my friends play golf - they just take all the good friends and a few cases of beer to the game - very fun indeed.

ripgut
Maybe i'll try a game again this summer, before moving back to Arizona. smile.gif Who knows maybe i'll like it, although i have no clue about the rules and such.

Golf is so much fun because it can be so hard! Even when you strugle, all it takes is one great shot and you're hooked again. At least for me anyway. My handicap is a 7.
Brodel
I used to play a fair amount with my dad when I was younger but stopped for about 8 years.
I still go to the driving range now and then, I went yesterday actually. It's just really nice and relaxing, go with a few friends and hang out whilst obliterating a few golf balls haha. I went to a 9hole wthat I used to go to as a kid but I found it quite frustrating because I wasnt very good, I would like to practice more and improve though, it is very relaxing and satisfying if you dont do too badly.
smaulz
I dig it 'cause you're not playing against anyone but yourself. Unfortunately, though, I can be my own worst opponent... sad.gif

Golf is a game of controlling your nerves and concentration. It is relaxing to breathe the open air for around four hours per round and enjoy shooting with people who are better than you (makes you strive to play better, especially when you muscle out a 300 yard drive! biggrin.gif)... I've been playing for almost all my life and my handicap is 10 right now (haven't played in 2 years and rebuilding my swing smile.gif).
Aaron
Ah, Golf... how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

Well for starters, as has been mentioned, it is a personally challenging game always striving for personal bests. When you play against another person (tennis, softball, etc.) you can always think that your opponent was off and it is hard to determine your personal performance.

Although my buddies and I don't chat it up like a bunch of nancies while playing, the camaraderie is very much present. Toss in a few beers on each side and maybe a stogie - good times!

It can be variably difficult, as you can choose to set yourself farther back or closer up on the tee box to challenge yourself that day. It is also an equalizing game, as ladies can hit from 20 yards shorter than men and then nothing but skill should come into play.

"Also, I truly believe in this saying, "It can be a sport (if you walk) or a game (if you ride)."

Typically the ones who hate the game have not yet become good enough to truly enjoy the subtleties of the game. Striking a hooded 5 iron flush and hooking it under the pines to roll it up on the green - wow. Hitting a 3/4 sand wedge 5 yards long of the pin, one hop then *zip* - oh baby. If you haven't done either of these two things I just said, then maybe that is why you don't quite understand how people can become hooked on it.

You mean not clearing the reds? Well we all claim that's the punishment, but really none of us want to see that... sick.gif

Exactly.

I have seen a few posts saying how awesome it is to crush a 300 yd. drive. I have done that before, my average drive is usually about 250 though. However, for me I get a lot more satisfaction from a crafty iron shot than a musceled up drive. Shaping a shot and sticking it on the green - to me THAT is exciting.

What about you guys, what shot really gets you going?
Paul
I like watching it sometimes or just playing pitch and putt, don't know why. I just do tongue.gif

I am with you, I like sticking the green pin high. Hitting a drive one the sweet spot is also great for me. My very first birdie early on in my golf career is what kept me striving to improve.

A type of shot that gets me motivated is clearing the ladie's tee on the first hole (so the nancies don't get laughing about dressing up in all the gear, and hit such a pathetic drive). After that, a shot I like to do to challenge myself is go to the farthest back tee, go one club down than what I should be using, and see if I can manage to make myself a perfect shot.

Although, something that is making me quite excited is that I'm rebuilding my swing. Currently, I'm able to hit a 3-wood around 225-240, which is quite exiciting compared to when I was about a year ago. The new swing is giving me better control over my ball, allowing me to perform some backspin tricks, as well as being able to introduce hook/slice when I want too. smile.gif
....
My favorite shot is hitting my wedge 160 yards...we have a par three on the course I go to a lot, and I usually use the wedge on it. yes.gif

Personally, I've been wanting to pick golf up for 3-4 years now but lo and behold I am a mere college student and cannot invest the time or money at the moment. Hopefully once I get into a career I will have the funds and weekends to do so. What attracts me to the sport is how quickly you can go from being in a state of euphoria over an incrdeible shot to, on the next hole maybe, shooting 6 over par. I can't think of another sport where fortunes can turn that quickly and that dramatically. It's exciting to me. And I hope that picking it up will help me gain more patience (or end up costing me a club each time I went out tongue.gif). Anyway. that's why I personally find it so appealing. O and that anyone willing to invest the time and effort can play it.
Behemoth
Nothing better than going out early Saturday morning and playing a round of golf with some friends. The best feeling is when you pure one off the tee right down the middle or put one trump tight right up against the flag - can't beat it. BTW -had my first Eagle last weekend on a Par 5 - felt awesome. happy.gif
psyko
Awesome job Behemoth! Eagles are quite rare to come by (if you're an amateur or just normal player like ourselves). I managed to pull out a birdie today and what's so wierd about it is I scuffed the chip and it still went 3 feet away from the hole! biggrin.gif
Glorious
I play it sometimes. I find it relaxing and a challenge. Just to improve my score each time. Its fun and relaxing, generally.
