Whats the way to exercise to lose weight. a good fitness center is a long way from my house and i dont have access to a car right now. I walk atleast 1 hour briskly every day and eat breakfast (1 plate) and dinner (1 plate) , no soda and lots of water. what other exercise regime can i go through for permenant weight loss besides walking briskly atleast 1 hour a day. I cannot jog because of a inherent genetic problem of knee problem after jogging everyday so any other solution?
panacea
i was going to say circuit training, but that would be pretty hard without the gym..

I would say running or jogging but since thats out...Any aerobic activity, biking maybe?
laz
First, I used to do pushups and crunches at home. But then I got a set of dumbbells and I use those to build up my upperbody (the more muscle you have, the more it burns calories/fats).
Emile
No trainer, one exercise=swimming. Very good exercise for the whole body and low-impact on the joints.

Or anything aerobic.

I can se u have a problem wit ur knee, but how well with biking work for u? if u hav no problem go ahead n bike its a real good alternative to jogging/running.

- Biking (MAINLY)
- Walking
- Crunches
- Sit-Ups
- Push-Ups

dont do alot all of a sudden start by lil n slowly progress ur way.

... once u hav lost the weight, a good idea after that would be to start weight lifting... then u wont have problems and u wont keep gaining weight, turn it all into musicle tongue.gif i lift weights alot, and it hasnt bought nothing but good to me... and once u pass the weight lifting thing and want something more... go for karate or Muay Thai like i did. so im pretty fit.

If you can, you may want to get rid of the traditional meal plan.
A regimen of 5-6 "mini-meals/snacks" (relative to activity) a day promotes a faster metabolism.
Otherwise, since you only eat at the beginning of the day, and the end. Your body may try to conserve instead of use.

I lost 2½ stone with a rowing machine, which took about 5-6 weeks. By rowing for 45 minutes each day and cutting my calorie intake to about 1000-1500 I was able to lose weight very quickly (I've haven't rowed for a year and the weight hasn't come back). With reasonably paced rowing after 20-30 minutes you have used all your blood sugar, meaning that you are then just burning fat.

I don't know if you can because of your knee injury (should be okay because there isn't any impact) but it is the only effective way I have found to lose weight permanently and it was easy to motivate myself to keep it up.

where do you buy this rowing machine from
Kompressor
body weight exercises....

basically you dont need to use any equipment...just do 3 set of 12 pushups every day ...along with 4 sets of 20 situps

do this every day for a week - if this is too easy or too hard decrease or increase the repetitions in each set...

after the 1st week....increase the repetitions...after the 2nd week increase number of sets

basically you know your doing something when you break a sweat and you feel it..otherwise your not doing enough...

If you want to lose weight you have to be active. You need to do cardiovascular workouts. Never mind the weights. You need to do swimming or biking exercises. Also if you want to quickly shed a few pounds, wear a garbage bag while biking. You will sweat like a pig and lose weight fast. Being active and eating right is the only way to lose weight.

Hey, I used to weight 11.5 stone, I now weight 9.25stone. This is all mainly thanks to eathing healthily and doing the following routing.

15 crunches (so much more effective than situps)
15 leg ups (you life your legs up without moving the rest of your body, basically reverse situps)

then i get out the weights, using the 4.5kg weights

15 reps of lying on my back and pushing them up into the air and lowering them slowly (slow = more effective as it strains the muscles mroe)
15 reps of just weight lifts

then using the 2.8kg weights

15 reps of lifting the weights from down by my side to outstreched
15 reps of having them by my shoulders and pushing them above my head

then 15 pressups, holding at top and bottom for 3 seconds.

I do this one-two times a day, depending if I've been to work or not. Sorry for not knowing the proper names, never bothered to learn them hehe. I think this works pretty well to lose some weight, then get toned up. Otherwise find transport to that gym hehe tongue.gif

Skip cardio completely.

Focus on increasing muscle mass.

You'll burn more calories throughout the day with more muscle mass, than you would during the 30min Taebo session (or whatever's hip these days.)

Believe it or not, you still get a great cardiovascular workout when working with weights alone. Keep rest intervals short, lift till exhaustion, rinse + repeat.

Trial a cardio-free workout for a month, and then come to your own conclusions. Bear in mind that weights will improve your physique, prevent muscular dystrophy, and will earn you a few extra points with members of the opposite sex.

I always thought they were the same thing? what's the difference?

Only way without causing severe joint problems for the fatties amongst us is Swimming, uses evey muscle in the body.

Aerobics causes problems on the knees if you're a chubby.

A muscle stimulation kit like T.E.N.S. is a good idea also.

I saw 1 plate off and 1 bowl of, how about eating lots of fruit n veg and keeping your calories = to what a typical person needs, it's like 'how long is a piece of string'?; same as 'how big is a plate'?

Weight Training is most effective burns about 150 calories every 10 min.
Combined with some cardio or swimming for only 1-1.5hrs total at the gym you should lose heaps of weight and gain lots of muscle mass.
The more mucle you have the more calories you burneven when you are idle.

There seems to be a lot of different advice in here huh.gif

yes, that is important... but ...if u eat 5 meals at mcdonalds every day the cardio is of little use.

The best way to lose weight is to have a varied exercise regime and a balanced healthy diet. Go for a 2-3 mile walk a day, spend time in the gym and do something fun like swimming. The weight should then start to come off in a properly controlled way, don't be tempted to start crash dieting or something similarly stupid!

I spent 4 weeks walking 2 miles a night with my GF. At the weekend we walked 5 miles. Nothing strenuous, just a lil walk.
We have not eaten any pizza, burgers, or other crap. My snacks have been replaced with fruit. I have so far gone down a jeans sizes. (42 - 40)

First, remember you want to lose fat, not weight. Thats why you use a tape measure instead of weighing scales.Weighing scales are decieving. Muscle weighs more than fat. Thats why some people stay away from weight training is because there weight stays the same, or goes up, but if you use the tape measure you can see the fat is coming off, and you're looking better and getting healthier. Thats what you wanted to begin with.

Then, getting a balanced routine that includes strength training is essential to getting the weight off and keeping it off. Cardio is important too, but if you're walking 5 miles a day with stronger legs, you'll burn even more fat.

Stay away from diet pills if you can, they all change how you feel, and they're temporary. Make it a lifestyle where you are always doing something active.

Good Luck!
njlouch
Let me add:

1) Agree - measure, don't weigh. I have lost ZERO weight, yet gone down 1 size!
2) Keep off the diet pills. I took them for a while and they made me really (REALLY - ask cos it aint nice to post in a thread) ill.
3) Routine is everything. Make plans - plan your meals, plan your walks, plan your shopping.
4) Enjoy it. It's not a chore. I walk with my GF and we chat about allsorts, don't even realise the distance.
5) If you don't see INSTANT results, don't worry, keep at it. It will work!

my weight is crazy, I can be quite chubby one month and then it will go the next based on how much I exercise (mainly just walking and football [soccer]) my arms are always tiny tho lol, i need to do some weights.

First of all, it's important to know that only YOU can decide to lose weight. Once you have seriously made a decision to stick it out and achieve your goals, you can do it!

I agree with the posts about doing resistance training (weights). Besides being great exercise, it increases your metabolism as you gain muscle, which causes you to burn more calories all day long (yes, even while you sleep).

But I disagree with those that say to do ONLY weights. Cardio is important as well, as you can keep your heartrate up (at a fat-burning level).

Finally, the last key is your food intake. There are many formulas online that help you calculate how much you should eat. If you are serious about getting in shape, I recommend keeping a food log for at least a few weeks, so you can see how much you are currently eating, and cut back where you need to. Eating healthy foods go a long way as well (there's truth to the saying "you are what you eat").

This is a pretty quick response, I could obviously go into more depth, but hopefully this will get you started. PM me if you want more info, I'd be happy to help in any way.

Hope this all helps. It worked for me (5'11" formerly 297 lbs, now 175 lbs).

Thanks snyper. To be truthful, I lost my first 100 pounds on WeightWatchers. Basically they show you how to eat right and exercise by reducing it to so many points per day. For anyone out there who doesn't know where to start in losing weight, I recommend WW. If you truthfully follow the program, it will work for you.

This is what I did to lose weight:

I started off doing 40 sit-ups a night for a couple of weeks, then did 60 for a couple more weeks, finally working my way up to just over 200 sit-ups a night.

I started doing press ups (push ups) when I was doing around 100 sit-ups a night, I started off doing about 20, then 40, then 60 (doing each one of the stages for around 2 weeks each).

I then got some weights and lifted them 50 times on each arm every night.

I would sometimes go for a short jog (a couple of miles).

One of the most import things to remember, is to stop eating fast food and lots of sugary food, I haven't eaten at McDonalds for over 4 months now, and I feel much better than I ever used to.

I have gone from weighing 154 pounds down to 110 pounds (5' 6").

^ sounds like a good routine as long as you aren't exercising the same muscles every night.

Nice.

I would also suggest enrolling at your local pool and swim 50 X 50 metre lenghts also followed by a hot shower and sauna.

Swimming will get all those muscles working.
