You do realize there aren't only "bad" hackers (black hat or whatever they call them). There are a lot of people out there hacking software and illegitimate activites like cyber-terrorism for the benefit of society. You say it like all hacking is bad.

White hat is a hacker that knows the same things, its just put into good use. such as network security.
Black hat is a hacker that puts his/her skills into bad use, stealing info, erasing stuff, etc.
Gray Hat is a hacker that is a wonderful mix, that not only works for the good, but does some nasty stuff when he/she has to. this guy falls into the Gray hat area.

Hope he also got rid of any backups they kept of their DB. Ahh well, at least the company got in the news and was shamed

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd much rather read about this kind of hacking than see a screen shot of a website that has been defaced. I guess, if you are going to do something "illegal" it might as well benefit mankind. What to go guy.

I used a PHPBB hack to post as an admin and notify the users that they need to patch their board before a "black hat hacker" comes in and destroys it.
A couple of people thanked me for it too.
