I just got back from a 2yr prison sentance for downloading Austin Powers 3 sometime in 2001.
it all depends on how careful you are. be a moron and you wont last long. cover your tracks and such and you should be golden. i do not however condone piracy and believe it is as bad a theft as any

Well, It depends, I have read a few cases of people getting caught by Warner Bros. The companies are getting smarter, they post fake torrents on popular torrent sites. TorrentSpy for example, has alot of these fake torrents that are just traps for people to fall into. If you downloaded from one of these torrents you're as good as dead =P.
Actually I think its more of a "luck" thing if you get caught for download copyrighted material, becuase there's so many people doing it that it's hardly possible that they will catch up everybody or at least a significant amount.
Nothing can guarantee you wont get caught but there are some things that help.

You are far safer using newsgroups to download movies, etc. than using P2P applications. News servers don't track what you download, only what you upload (and some don't even track that). Generally only the uploaders are subject to getting caught.
The thing you have to ask yourself is that knowing that there is even the slightest possibility that you might get caught and subsequently have to go to prison or pay a huge fine or both, is it worth it? Yeah, sure, "everyone" does it and out of "everyone" a small minority get nailed for it, but, I guarantee you that every one of those that do get nailed for it will tell you that it's just not worth the hell your life will be if you fall into that minority. So, is it worth it to risk everything you own, your friends, your family, career, etc. just to download a movie?
I believe I am God, so that gives me the right to download movies. Everyone else, however, should pay.
They are cracking down on movies, just like music a year ago. If you use an open torrent site, you're more likely to get caught. I'm basically ripping Blockbuster off, because I download a movie, watch it and then delete it.

The quality of movies almost begs for me to download, but quite honestly I can't stand to watch a new movie on such a small screen and such bad quality. So off to the theatres I go.
i dunt need to dl movies, i get them free to rent from blockbuster, pays to have family who run a store, so i get free rentals, but music on the other hand is baddd... dont dl moveis movies more likly to get u busted anyhow, music they usually make u either pay a fine, or warn you, ive gotten 2 warnings so i stopped dlin music till like next month lol

It seems that people hat are being fined/imprisoned are those that share their files on P2P programs. However I wouldn't use P2P anymore, I'd stick to newsgroups as roadwarrior says, maybe even IRC although i've never tried to download from it.

i dont download movies often, maybe once every few months, but I always go to the movies theathers to watch movies, like once a week or so, i have a collection of tickets of all the movies ive seen... if i saved those 7 - 10 dollars wow ill have a very big sum now

I have downloaded movies before, because where I live there is not really a theater close by and it does not ever play independent films....If I like the movie I will buy the dvd though....I never keep the downloaded copy and toss it after one view..I know I know it is illegal. But for some movies there is no other way I will be able to watch it unless it is a year later on dvd 
I wish there was on online site that you could watch movies still in the theater...but you know crazy people who want to get something for free would crack it

I've had at least 2 fake torrents, I even had a fake one for linux??? I mean WTF? At least give me a real linux one, i can see that trying to download other things are bad. I don't download anymore since kazaa failed.
You can get in trouble for uploading, providing the file for others. But as far as I know, know one has gotten in trouble for downloading. Its the one that has certain files available for upload that the RIAA/MPAA tracks and prosecutes. Thats why during these court proceedings the RIAA will say "We tracked them and they had ********** these files for uploads", usually alot of them (hundreds to thousands) and theb they will name them. As for downloading, I've known friends that have been caught and warned, but not prosecuted.

I concur good doctor. It would be a waste of Legal Fees if they persecuted small sharers. They want groups like BRUtUS and other DVD-RIP groups as they are the people that put it up. The sites like Suprnova were the ones that they like to attack.

I have not had adsl long, maybe 5 months or so, but in that time I must of downloaded at least 60 films. I only use private torrent sites, and the occasional one or two from irc.
If I really want to see a film that I know is good, I will pay and go and see it at the cinema, as its just not the same watching it on your TV screen at home

I've been downloading movies since 1999 and never have once been caught i just never share on P2P programs.. i only used them back in the days before torrent was around.. torrent is better but newsgroups / irc is best for protection from getting caught... torrent is best option tho.

In general, it is very unlikely (depending on the software you use of course and where you live) that a regular "leeching" user will get caught. My personal stats: downloading movies for 5 years or so now, many many movies and nothing.
oh wait.. there's like 6 unsecured wireless networks i can log on to and access and i do most of the time when i'm far enough from my router anyway..

Normally I don't support movie downloading. A lot of people I know are actually in the movie industry and I've seen how it all works; it really does take a sh*tload of work to make a movie on the parts of hundreds of people. I've actually made a couple of short films myself and it is far more effort than it's commonly thought.
But the MPAA and the RIAA are composed of nothing but greedy dickholes. The entire world of professional moviemaking is corrupted and now is little more than popularity contests, dating other actors, and gouging money. They're all afraid of change; afraid that they'll have to actually wait a few months before they buy their own tropical islands and solid gold poolside bars.
Someone needs to do to movies what iTunes did to music--create a site where one can download movies and pay either a minimal monthly fee or a very minimal amount per movie. Paradoxically though there would have to be some kind of encryption for the movie files themselves...perhaps personalized encryption and decryption keys? Decryption keys that expire after a set period of time?
If someone can convince people to pay a little bit for a guaranteed-quality-and-sound HD movie at respectable size, the idea could potentially be the kind of runaway success that iTunes has become.

I've downloaded movies I've gone to see in the theater that I liked. As far as I'm concerned, if I'm paying $10 per viewing, I damn well should be able to at least have a rewind and see it one more time - this time without people talking, kids kicking my seat, wrappers crumpling, drinks splashing on the floor, etc.

taking your family to the movies has become incredibly overpriced...an outing for 2 adults and a child for 1 movie can cost somewhere around $60.. that is just way too much to spend on a single movie. Movie stars will make $8 mil per flick... while the average person making around $30 grand a year pays a days salary to take his kid to the movies... for people in that position i completely support downloading a movie within 30 minutes, watch it, and buy some groceries...

Ill still watch an occasional flick on the big screen if its a truly must-see choice. I bring in my own goodies though and buy the large refillable soda then disperse it out in small cups. Theater owners are rapists.

I download lots of movies. But it's funny when I see one of the movies I have on TV. I'd rather watch it on TV, it's like watching it again for the first time.
This is one of those things where I look at it and go "you know what, I'd rather take the consequences of my actions knowing I enjoyed it rather then avoid it."
