Full Version: Print Spooler Service is Missing

Zer0_II
I'm trying to setup my printer. I have a Lexmark X73. Whenever I click on 'Add a Printer' in Printers and Faxes in the control panel I get the following error message: Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running. Whenever I look under services, Print Spooler is not listed. I wasn't aware that a service could be removed from the list. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this? I really need to get this printer working so I can print my assignments for school. TIA
k22
it has probably been removed from the registry...you would find it here

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler

i've attached an exported branch from my registry (XP Pro SP2) that you can run to see if it fixes the problem. would need to reboot after merging most likely. you must remove the .txt to be able to run the file

On my printer, it often gets frozen and shows up in task manager as using 100% CPU on the spoolsv so I usually end up ending that process. Of course, then I can't print until after I reboot. Is there an easier way to deal with this problem; or better yet, how do I avoid it in the first place? Thanks -- Vicki

I have a problem. I am installing Adobe Acrobat 8 and everything starts off fine. Once the program is finished installing the install wizard attempts to start the service "spooler" and it says that I should I should make sure that I have all of the required permissions to start the service. So I open up registry and then I see that it is there under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler

So I check the permissions and is seems like everything is fine. So I go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services because I found out that I can check the dependencies tab in its properties here. The problem is that it is not here confused.gif it is however in the registry.

Can anyone help me?

PS I think I should mention that I am currently running Tiny XP beast edition by eXPerience.

Wow! All these one post wanders!

People, an easier way is to open msconfig from the run option and ensure that printspooler is checked there.
cloudstr
could someone upload their print spooler registry for a XP SP2 system.

i badly need the registry file so i can get printers to work...

Sorry to be another one-post-wonder, but i really couldn't find help for this anywhere else. I have the same problem, my printer spooler is missing under services and from the registry. can someone please explain what registry file i'm supposed to copy and where, and how does that long list of values above help fix things? (sorry, I'm a noob when it comes to registry editing)
any help is much appreciated!
.AlleymaN
Copy all the text, paste in notepad, save the file as something.reg and run it and accept changes.

I have the same problem on my pc - spooler is missing under services and is removed from the registry also
Can you please send me the exported branch from your registry (XP Home SP2) and tell me how to install it?
Thanks

I also have removed some recent malware and viruses from my computer. I was told to run some free scans from the thread I opened HERE

just copy and paste the text posted above into a text file, rename the file to spooler.reg and double click. restart and you should be golden, assuming the winspool.drv file is not missing.

This is a common problem for those who strip down XP (or using a stripped down XP). The Print Spooler service is using something like 4mb IIRC of RAM even if you don't have a printer. So, it's one of the first things people usually remove from Windows.

Btw, Tiny XP is illegal you can't download Windows legally on P2P Exchange networks.
The_Decryptor
Wow, popular thread.

And yet another stripped down CD that completely breaks things (do these people who make them even know what they're doing?)

From the diagnos you mention, it appears that your Spooler service has been infected. If not properly secured, Spooler can be easily infected. This is why some people disable that service. You need to have a full scan of your system.

do you have the following files present on your system?

C:\Windows\system32\printui.dll
C:\Windows\ntprint.dll

running filemon while clicking the add printer button shows that both of these dll's are accessed in the process. you should be able to extract them from a legit XP CD if they are not there.

Can we have your machine specs please. What version of XP are you using? Where you able to use printers before this?

Sorry for all the questions, but it seems people this thread have taken to not supplying any information on their systems at all.

It's not really a computer issue, it's the version of windows they're using.

That is, they're using a hacked version of windows that breaks things.

i am having similar problems adding a printer. the print spooler was missing and i added the registry key from this thread and it is now in my services but now i can't star it i keep getting "error 1058 the service can't be started because its disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it" Anyone have any ideas?

Hi all. First of all... Windows sucks, but as abovementioned some software just doesn't work on anything else or has no replacement good enough sad.gif .

I personally use kubuntu, recently installed kde 4.2..(dualboot with tiny)

Here is my problem:

I am using Tiny XP Rev09 [7], for the sole purpose of working on DataCAD 11. In order for it to work properly, I have to use a File Printer on A1 scale.
So, I got the Print Spooler Service running, started going through the wizzard to Install the File Printer but right at the last step, "Finish" button, then it asks me for a Windows XP CD to continue the installation!

Can anybody help me to get a printer working?

help, i have the 'printer spooler' not running problem as well.

i've tried to solve it by following the various instructions in this thread, but to no avail! can anyone help me with it?
i'm using the normal version XP. when i go to admin tools>services>print spooler and try to 'start', the reply is 'could not start the print spooler service on local computer. Error 2: The system could not find the file specified.'
does anyone know if i lack a certain file to install my printer? would appreciate the help (^_^)
johnpol78
To resolve this you do one thing , just reinstall the drivers for the printer. i hope this will resolve your issue .if not try step mentioned above .
