does anyone else, besides me, think that the current windows vista theme is butt is ugly? the translucent border is worst than osx 10.1 and the icons are worst than windows xp icons. i know this isn't the final theme but why are so many people eager to mimic vista's look on windows xp? i can't understand why people go to so much trouble to make their windows look and function worst. sick.gif

Well thank-you for your opinion wise guy, but it seems like most of the skinning population doesn't agree with you.

Hence why people want to imitate Vista's interface.
The Watcher
I think it's ugly also. I don't think it's the greatest theme ever. Some of its component do look nice. Remember when Windows XP came out and people still had their Win98 and Win2000, WinME. They all started copying the WinXP style (Luna) and then suddenly people started making Visual Styles and Luna was deserted by most for these new visual styles. Same thing is gonna happen here. wait t'ill cool Vista styles come out and then everyone will switch to them.

I'm sure many of Neowin's own skinners will make some very great visual styles for Vista.

I love the fact that you can have transparent borders and such, this is one of the coolest new feature of Vista and it could help exapnd the new visual styles into better ones. Anyways ... Vista's style is indeed ugly. But fear not, each person has his own taste.
Borbus
Actually I do partially agree with you. I don't think its "butt ugly" but I don't think it is as good as the hype surrounding it would suggest. The glass might look good as a screenshot but its not very useable and it starts to look crap when windows are piled on top of each other. I think the per pixel alpha blending of vista/WB5 will be put to much better use when the hype about glass dies down a bit.

Vista looks better than XP.
But Vista doesnt look good either.

Let's just leave it at, It's the best windows pre-packaged skin to date tongue.gif

I'd say it's the best skin to come from Microsoft to date, but I think it's pretty godawful too. With the blur effect (ironic since it's Bringing CLARITY to your world) in Vista, it's not so bad, but the WB versions aren't so great because the opaque level is extremely low, and when windows get stacked up they start looking terrible.

I constantly find it funny that indie artists like people at this forum pump out skins that are infinitely better than those from Microsoft biggrin.gif

Exactly.
You're right, OP, it is ugly however, it is the best Microsoft have ever done. Also, it is the best Microsoft can do.

Though its still no way near OS X. That's because Apple, unlike Microsoft, are stylists. Even Apple users are more focused on style. I've noticed something in my college: those sitting down, using Apple computers are FAR better dressed than those using the windows machines. What can you do? When it comes down to aesthetics, Apple have more talent in amongst their programmers.

I used to think Microsoft were capable of more, but eventually, I gave up hope and accepted the truth.
lardiop
Really not a fan of what Microsoft has done with the UI. I seriously doubt that this will be the final UI look and I'm kinda hoping for a radical color scheme change by MS before RTM.
seanlich
There will be plenty of different visual styles that come out to change the way vista looks.

Hey, if you start learning now by the time vista comes out you will be able to make a theme yourself. Give it a try, its not that scary.
l77Il7H
i am just distrubed that people are trying so hard to mimic it. i know m$ is trying their best but that doesn't really matter because i'll count on neowin to release kick ass theme for vista.

Let me ask all of you would you think Vista was all that new and had all these great features and functions if you saw it running ona system and it looked just liek XP or windows 95/2k look without haveing anything open to show it is new cause for me first site be oh mmm you running XP big whoop.

Hrrm. The Vista UI definitely looks better than Luna. Luna gets boring after a while.

(Oh, and some punctuation in that paragraph might be good too.)
notuptome2004

Vista visual styles are capable of so much more than Xp ones. One day a Vista style will come out and you'll just stare at your monitor and say, "Holy ****! Why can't Microsoft make something that cool?"
wutang01
IMHO, I reckon the Vista theme is awesome. I'm not going to use it on my XP machine yet.
Otherwise I'll get bored of it one year early ... lol happy.gif

No offence to all the amazing skin writers out there, but to me it seems msstyle development has waned off late - nothing really to match the creativity of b0se (opusos series), bant, chaninja etc. Rather than emulating the vista theme, I'd like to see someone with their skill create something awesome!

Sadly what with my degree course, job and insane social life I don't have the time myself to give it a shot - then again I don't think I have the ability or patience either!
.Ark
I actually like the vista theme and I do agree with the fact that its not the greatest ever... but when does it end? a few people said that a new and nice skin needs to come out...that guy said osx skin sucks... an amazing skin will come out(like they did before) and you will get bored of it and say the same thing again... argh... you will never be satisfied! tongue.gif

Practically every Aero mockup to date has pointed out an interface similar to the one we see today in the latest betas. I for one seriously doubt we'll see a radical change before RTM.

i prefere "Slate" to "Aero" and the icons are rather ugly
but one thing that is a lot better is thas MS have finally relised how good PNGs are and thats how they get the transparency in the skin (by using PNGs instead of BMPs)

1. theres no constructive feedback you have given microsoft to fix the problem all there is just bashing.
2. microsoft does not care (in the negative aspect) what anyone thinks about their theme glass is final and they know people will use it or turn it off.

You're critique on this thread is that it doesn't give feedback to Microsoft. The second thing you inform us of is that Microsoft doesn't care about what their customers think. So given the latter, it doesn't really matter that this thread doesn't provide constructive feedback.
Tony.
There is never a theme which everyone agree's on. So stop complaining. I think the UI looks really good, and i'm looking forward to the final product. But just because you don't like an unfinished UI doesn't mean you can really bash Microsoft about it.

Like someone has said, someone will make a UI which will appeal to you, and if you can do any better, be a beta tester, get Vista nd start modding it to your likings. *sighs*

it just bother me that m$ has so much pride in their software, i.e.: their developer tattooed himself with a vista logo, yet they aren't listening to their customers. i haven't seen a single feature in vista that isn't available in osx already. yet people are so excited about vista, that really don't make any sense. i feel like we waited 5 years just for m$ to bring us to apple's level. doesn't that frustrate you guys at all?
.Ark
It does... and people are excited because these features were never available with windows and people can't afford mac's get these features and moreover, if you want me to be honest, I am not a huge fan of mac... I like mac's cuz their GUI is somewhat good and its UNIX. I mean, it takes you forever to drag the damn window to make it bigger... The browser windows are never full screen which frustrates me and the options are somewhere on the top and the window is somewhere on the bottom, wtf? Can't we just have the options sticking to the window.. I am not saying that mac sucks, but I am just saying that each software has its own pro's and con's but MS is just a little behind and they will catch up. wink.gif

Here's a news flash for you, and I hate to be the one bearing this news, but for the most part, people DON'T CARE about Apple. Until the iPod, most people though the company had died, and even now probably the vast majority don't even realize that Apple makes any products other than the iPod.

Apple is a non-issue. It doesn't matter how superneatokeen OS X is, if it simply doesn't allow people to do what they want to do with their computers, and doesn't allow them to run the software they want to run. I'm not talking about alternatives to what they are using...I mean, actually using the program they want to use. And besides, what exactly did Apple do? Glop a fruity effeminate idiot-proof GUI on top of a BSD subsystem. Woopdie-doo. So, Microsoft could glop their explorer shell on top of a BSD-based system, add some irrelevant little widgets and swooshy effects everywhere, annoying bouncing icons, a neato search feature that I'd personally never use because I have this crazy skill called "organization", and give everything a creamy glaze, and they would be touted as the most innovative OS creator on the planet. Hell, Linux is vastly more mediocre and difficult to use on the desktop, and it still has a higher installed base than Apple.

And don't even try that crap about "well people don't buy Macs because they are more expensive, or blah blah blah -insert elitist crap". By that same logic, no one on the planet would be purchasing iPods, because they are more expensive and have less features than comparable players. Yet they sell like hotcakes. If people WANTED Apple computers, they'd buy them. And I'm not talking about the mindless lemmings on forums such as this one that get hard-ons over a few screenshots then plaster a few days that they "Switched!!11ONE!!' to their little craptastic Mac Mini or whatever...then turn around 3 months later and try to pawn the POS on eBay. I, and everyone else, care about the features of Vista simply because the platform we prefer (and you, based on your devart profile) is getting features we want and can use. That's all that matters. Not that it's getting features that some non-issue OS has had for awhile.

*whew* w00t.gif
notuptome2004
OSX has had some features that Ms didnt have but now will have but ther miniscule type feaures cause OSX still isant as advanced as Vista will be or is now i mean it may seem that way but no it isant ther is still alot of functions and features OSX dont have. and dont forget Apple has uses some functiosn features M$ has in windows XP that OSX originaly didnt have. the fact being is OSX and Apple are tired tword Video production and Photoshop in most cases and thats ther stregths Vista is tired tword Genral usage and Gameing OSX and apple will never live up to those 2 things entirely and so what if Vista has features OSX has had for years just cause they are simuler dosant mean they work the same and at the same time Vista may add functions 2 one feature or enhance what OSX does

I agree it's ugly and I hope it changes significantly.

What's funnier than people who want to mimic the Vista VS in XP are the people who change their online identities to coincide with the Vista look. People add Vista beta UI elements to their sigs, use "Aero-man" as their usernames, and do other things to show their blind support.

MS could change their Windows logo to a turd and people would start loading their sigs up with feces just because it's new. I don't have a problem with this behavior, I just think it's a little strange.
