How are these wallpapers taken? Since WinXP, the trend seems to be close-ups and photorealistic effects. Are these real pictures taken with very high-quality cameras? Or just photoshopped stuff?

that last pic of the building is pretty horrendous, looks like photoshop. The plants and boring ocean view are camera though.
As much as we all like these wallpapers. They are going to be gone from Windows Vista when it ships, replaced with even better ones.
So save them. They won't be about much longer.

I must say, both Apple and Microsoft take amazing stock photos for their OSes. One of my favorite things about getting a new OS, lol.

Somehow I still like the Mac ones better- simple and nice.
Pfff...again I'm being picky, these wallpapers aren't that amazing. For me they're not aesthetic enough. An picture needs to have some kind of meaning behind it. Without a meaning, the picture has no emotion. A picture with no emotion, cannot be rendered as an picture at all, just an image. No offence to the creator or anything, but these images seem to have no real meaning to them. What's the caption towards a fish? The fish itself isn't that interesting, and maybe it's just my opinion, but why would you want to see it every time you turned on your computer?
The only wallpaper from the sample gallery I checked out that I can see having any purpose is the close up focused image of the plant. This can symbolise nature, and purity. Exactly what Microsoft are looking for in the theme for Vista.
Also, all of the pictures are photographs, and not all have been dramatically improved with photoshop, but have been, as it were *Photoshopped*.
