I have that ugly shaded square behind my desktop icons somehow. I don't know if I changed a setting or what. Please give me all solutions to this problem.

My guess is you are using XP icons with the alpha layer on Win2k or some other windows.
You can use desktopx to display those icons properly or change your background to black.
