Opera is known as the fastest and smallest full-featured browser, a first choice for people using older PCs and Windows 95 and a brilliant alternative to the default IE from Microsoft.
This new version has a chance to actually beat IE hands-down because it has a truckload of new and exciting features. It complies to all the current web-page standards, it has a completely new interface (you can choose from single window and multi-window view), built-in search, a download manager, an advanced mail/news reader, print preview, a huge bookmark collection and much more in a 2Mb free package! Well, the free package also includes banner ads, but Opera is believed to be completely free of spyware, unlike some of its competitors. It’s lightning fast as well as stable and it looks gorgeous. It’s simply perfect! For a complete list of features check out the official website, there’s vastly more to discover.

I wish they'd fix the text misaligned out of menu boundary on Gmail, SGI, Dell and other sites that use such menu. And that sites would update every time you visit them, especially when you first start the browser, now even if I set Check Documents/Images to Always, on start up I see cached page, ennoying. And what do we get? Ability to rename things... I mean aside from that Hotmail fix none of that stuff is any use.

With the minimal focus on features and everything about bug fixing and stability, 9.01 looks to end up like a really good version.

Now that fixes actually becoming serious, are these builds safe to install overtop of the existing Opera, or do I have to put it into a different folder, or uninstall 9.0final and put this instead?

Anyone notice how in build 8533, when my.opera.com/desktopteam is loaded, a Widget icon appears right beside the RSS icon? I swear it wasn't there before... huh.gif

In any case, it downloads a mini RSS widget for that blog. Pretty nice.

Build 8629/3539/466 Released --> Opera 9.10
Quote -
Introducing new bugs
As promised last week, here's the first build with built-in Fraud Protection. It's a very early preview of the technology, so everything is not entirely done yet, some sites actually show up wrong (silly bug with CNET sites!), and the icons are kind of ugly. Even the version number is wrong

But that's what this blog is all about: Bleeding edge. Enjoy!

Known issues
High CPU usage on Google maps
UNIX - Crash when changing file handler from download dialog
Opera will in some cases not start on upgrading. (use clean install)

Changelog
Improved stability
Prevented page reload when navigating to "#"
Fixed problem where pages showed the incorrect favicon
Fixed problem where multimedia keyboard shortcuts would not work when Opera was focused
Attempted to fix problems experienced on some pages when using a slow Internet connection by increasing opera:config#Network|HTTPLoadingDelayedTimeout to 60 seconds
Fixed bug where document.body.currentStyle.height reported the wrong value
Fixed bug where currentStyle.width was not correct if width is set by a script
Fixed bug where 'Open all' from Widgets menu was broken
Fixed bug where BCC header was visible to recipients in resent messages
Fixed bug where cookies could not be removed using XMLHttpRequest
Fixed bug where one could not log in to Gmail with "Accept only cookies for the site I visit" enabled
Changed Mozilla ID string spoof to mimic Firefox
Fixed bug where browser.js wasn't cached correctly
Fixed issue where stored passwords were lost after enabling/disabling the master password
Made IE ID string spoof as Windows on Linux/UNIX and Mac
XMLHttpRequest didn't handle redirects
Enabled use of the Authorization header in XMLHttpRequest
"Save target as" and "Save to disk" now play well together
"Save directly to" now works
Improved error message when a dictionary isn't installed for the spelling checker

Mac-specific
Use the multi-line form field font in the source viewer
When saving multiple times, use the directory saved to during the previous save operation

Fixed an issue with opacity on links that have images nested in them
Find in page now has colors that are easier to see, while also being configurable (opera:config#Colors|HighlightedBackground)
Some fixes to Search in hotclick menu
Removed "Open when download complete" from File type dialog (while we fix it..)

Build 8649/3554/490 Released
Quote -
Another weekly for you, smoking hot from the build servers, even our testers haven't played much with these before you, so be nice to them!

What you will see:

Fraud protection is not enabled by default anymore. We basically had to turn it on by default in the first weeklies to make sure we got as much feedback as possible in the limited time we had.

However, it's a new feature and we think users may need some time to get used to this idea, so we've made it an opt-in feature for now. Opera is about giving users the choice, after all.

Technically, there's a difference in how we transmit the data to the site check server. We now use https when we send information about an https server, to ensure that the trust information is at least as reliable as the original content. We still prefer to use http most of the time, since we're not very comfortable with sending home information that our users can't easily inspect.

Other changes:

We've fixed a number of bugs since last week, including the super-annoying gzip cache bug. NOTE: You may need to empty your cache before everything goes back to normal.

What's going on:

The desktop team was represented in the first Opera Backstage Russia event, in Ivanovo last week.

Next week we'll also participate in Webmaster World in Las Vegas. Be sure to drop by the Opera booth if you're there!

Yesterday, W3C released the first public working draft of the Widgets 1.0 specification, largely based on the current Opera implementation.

Changes since last weekly
Fixed bug where "Go to URL" feature deselects last one or two characters of a URL
Fixed bug where newsfeed count did not updated in Mail panel status bar
Fixed bug where cnn.com didn't always finish loading
Fixed bug where accesskeys didn't work right on frame pages
Fixed bug where Gzipped pages was not decoded when loaded from cache
Added preference to disable trust button in address bar opera:config#SecurityPrefs|EnableTrustButton
Fixed Finnish translation

Opera 9.1 weekly build
By olli. Friday, 24. November 2006, 12:23:51

We have fixed some important problems in this build and we are now much closer to release. Please remember that these builds are not well tested and not intended as production releases :-)

Changelog
Windows media plugin now works even if java is disabled
Fixed hanging when hovering some pages, for example elkjop.no
Fixed issue with floating point numbers treated as integers on some linux systems (caused some CSS and scripts to fail)
Several Fraud protection fixes
Several Memory leak and crash fixes
Wand data is stored in a new format - please read below!
Quote -
We made a change to the format Wand data is stored in: this means that if you upgrade to this build, you should not downgrade to a build with the previous format, as you would lose your Wand data. If you choose to upgrade an existing Opera install (note that we recommend against this with weekly builds), and you want to be on the safe side, please make a manual backup of the file wand.dat in your profile before ugprading. The new format also might mean that *some* data for logins *might* not be available anymore: we would very much appreciate feedback about this, with a URL to the page where you lost your Wand data.

You may have read about a phishing attack on MySpace that took advantage of
automatic form filling in other browsers. Although Opera was not directly
affected, these new changes make it even harder for users to be tricked by this attack.

By csant. Tuesday, 5. December 2006, 10:42:30

PhishTank has been added as an additional Fraud Protection blacklist. PhishTank is a free community site where anyone can submit, verify, track and share phishing data.

Changelog
Fixes to the Fraud Protection feature.
Fixes to Opera freezing with Flash 9 on Linux.
Fixed smooth scrolling on UNIX! w00t!!1!
Flash now works on FreeBSD! OMG!!!11!1!
Quote -
We would like feedback specifically on any regressions you might notice with plug-ins on Linux. Note that the fixes might not fix all issues with Flash 9 yet, but you should see improvements.

A little note on where to enable smooth scrolling on UNIX: you find a checkbox to enable the feature in the advanced tab of the preferences, under "Browsing".

For our FreeBSD users that would like to experiment with Flash on FreeBSD: getting Flash to work is (unfortunately) not completely straight-forward yet, but here is a little HOWTO:

Copy operapluginwrapper from the Linux static .1 archive to your local installation
