Full Version: Firefox 2 - Add-on Recommendations
Neowin Forums > Help & Discussion Center > A Collection of Essential Guides
Pages: 1, 2, 3, 4

With Firefox 2 packing many new features already, I've had to adjust my list to better represent the updates I want. The add-ons listed here will block ads, download videos, notify you when you have mail, or just help you make web pages. Each add-on listed below is an excellent addition to the browser in its own way.

Full list: Post the guide, not the link.
TheRealRiscy
A few that I use in FF are -

Search and Go - useful for copying and pasting web addresses
Gmail Space - which lets you use Gmail for storage
FoxClocks - timezones around the world

Cheers
Riscy
Sartoris

My recommendations:

IE Tab
(for pages that will not work in FF, such as those that use activeX. It is faster than opening IE)

PDF Download (lets you choose whether to download or open pdf files which you stumble upon on the net)

Customize Google

FlashGot (for large downloads if you have a download manager)
brentaal
NoScript
AdBlock Plus
Video Downloader
CuteMenus

Come on guys, try and keep this on topic. It's about Firefox add ons, not about what browser is best and who said what.

I'd add All In One sidebar to that list, it's great even if you don't use the sidebar since you can have a toolbar under the tabs or pretty much anywhere else.
flapjackman176
adblock! i love not seeing those annoying ad banners all over the place.

i usually just look through the highest rated and see which ones are useful. There are so many of them.. its wonderful.
herbert7890
You all forgot to mention one of the best add ons for firefox..... Download StatusBar, its a really good add-on for ff, it replaces the default download box, for a status info and progress at the botton of the browser... my favorite
Quillz
Wow... Adblock Plus is an awesome extension!
Chad
Ok guys, the thread is obviously about Firefox 2 and it's add-ons. Keep the 'get opera' trolling out.

I definitely agree with installing Adblock Plus, DownThemAll!, and Video Downloader.

I have way too many extensions but I use them all...

Adblock; Allow Right Click; Customize Google; Dictionary Search; Download Status Bar; Gmail Notifier; IE View; Image Toolbar; NoScript; Password Exporter; Save Image in Folder; Undo Closed Tab.

I used to use TabMixPlus but it don't work with 2.0

The best new feature of Firefox is the spel cheeker. Works a treat even though it doesn't recognize "Firefox" as a correctly spelt word.
LunarFalcon
I like to keep them to a minimum, using only gmail notifier and just recently, adblock plus
velkymx
Now that most of the extensions (addons) are updated, I am going to be adding new ones to the list.

Try "Super DragandGo" extension. This essentially lets you drag and drop a link to open in a new tab. If you have used Maxthon or Avant, you will know what I mean.

Just use it once and you may be pleasantly surprised by its usefulness. I just can't browse without Super DragandGo. The official website can be found at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/137/

Hehe biggrin.gif call me an extensions addict or whatever, but I just like how all those extension make browsing such a pleasant experience. And the only performance impact all of them do is make startup time slower and add maybe 40Mb ram usage. My firefox never takes up more than 200MB ram when browsing with like 10 tabs. Resources is not an issue for me as you can see from my specs...

rolleyes.gif Adblock and Noscript are arguably the 2 best extensions for Firefox. Nobody is talking about specifically blocking Neowin adds, they're talking about using very useful extensions in general.

All of these are awesome extensions

I didn't see these ones mentioned before (so please accept my apologies if they've already been posted)

Auto Copy
- Allows you to highlight text and it automatically copies it to the clipboard. It can be turned on or off via an icon in in the Status Bar.

Add Bookmark Here
- Adds a link to the root of each folder in your Bookmarks.

dotCOMplete
- Allows you to customise keyboard short cuts.
- For example I like to have SHIFT+ENTER automatially fill out .net (e.g. type in "neowin" and then use the shortcut to add the www. and .net part around the text).

myurlbar_a
- Typing a name in the Address bar will automatically search your Bookmarks and provide a quick link.
supernova_00
Except for the default (Talkback and domInspector), the only other extension I use is Undo Closed Tabs Button.

- Adblock Plus 0.7.2.1
You don't need an automatic filter updater, just configure it once and the n every few weeks or so

- Download Statusbar 0.9.4.3

- DownThemAll! 0.9.9.7
I don't need it often but i sure comes in handy when downloading pdfs or something from a professor's website

- Drag de Go 0.2.5
Be sure to check this extension out! You can drag and drop text, links, images in any direction and then open the url, save the image, searxh for the text in your favourite search engine and much more.

- Greasemonkey 0.6.6.20061017.0
Trying it out. Still trying to find any really good userscripts.

- MenuX 0.2.4.5
Much, much better then CompactMenu. More Options, it looks better...

- MR Tech Local Install 5.3.1.1
To get rid of max version test, archive updated extensions

- NoScript 1.1.4.5
I'm pretty paranoid. And it sure blocks many nasty scripts

- Tab Mix Plus 0.3.0.61001
FF2 really improved on tab browsing, but there are some features that come with TMP that FF2 still lacks. (like Tab activation by mouse hovering, set tab size to 100px)

Is there a particular reason? I have it installed just so that I can disable the compatibility checking. Usually the extension works just fine, it's just that the author of the extension didn't program the OK for some version numbers.
